Abstract

There is disclosed an artificial hip joint comprising a stem 2 and a tapered insert 3, the insert having a ball and socket joint 6 mounted thereon or integral thereto and extending into the stem. The stem which is of moulded form comprises a carbon fibre and polymer composite material and has a Young's Modulus that is not more than 40 Gpa but preferably within the range 15-30 Gpa. The carbon fibre content of the composite material is preferably up to 50% by volume and the polymer constituent is a biocompatible polymer such as epoxy, polysulfone or polyetherketone. The insert may be provided with metallic or composite material reinforcement in the upper, neck region thereof and may extend only into the upper region of the stem or may extend to its lower end.

Description

ARTIFICIAL JOINTS This invention relates to artificial joints and is particularly concerned with stems therefor.
The invention has particular application to artificial hip joints.
The invention provides a stem having a lower stiffness (elastic modulus) than stems currently available. This lower stiffness tends to result in a more natural distribution of stresses in the femur, and also reduces stresses in the stem of the implanted artificial joint. These advantages are expected to result in a longer implant life and improved retention of bone stock around the implanted joint.
According to one aspect of the invention, a stem for an artificial joint has a Young's Modulus value of not more than 40 Gpa (Gigapascals).
According to another aspect of the invention, a stem for an artificial joint comprises carbon fibre and polymer composite material.
The composite material preferably has a Young's Modulus value of not more than 40 Gpa, and is desirably in the range of 15 to 30 Gpa.
The polymer constituent of the composite material may comprise one or more of polyetherketone, polyetheretherketone, epoxy, polysulphone or other biocompatible polymer.
The carbon fibre content of the composite material is preferably up to 50% (by volume).
The invention further resides in an artificial joint comprising a combination of the inventive stem (according to either aspect), and an insert extending into said stem.
The insert may extend only into the upper region of the stem, or, alternatively, may extend further, even down to the lower (tip) end of the stem.
The insert may be provided with reinforcement in the upper (neck) region thereof. The reinforcement may be metallic or of plastics composite material incorporating carbon fibres.
The various aspects of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein : Figure 1 is a front medial view of an artificial hip joint, and Figure 2 is a side anterior view thereof.
With reference to the figures, an artificial hip joint 1 comprises a stem 2 and an insert 3 extending into the stem for about 50% of its length. The stem has a lower (tip) end 4 and an upper or neck region 5 thereof. The ball 6 of a ball and socket joint is mounted on, (or is integral with), the upper end of the insert 3. The ball 6 may be of metallic or ceramic material.
The insert 3, which is of metallic or carbon fibre composite material, tapers inwardly along its lower (distal) portion.
An alternative form of insert 3 may be fatter in the middle.
The stem 2 is of moulded form and comprises carbon fibre and polymer plastics material having a Young's Modulus value of not more than 40 Gpa, and desirably between 15 to 30 Gpa.
The polymer constituent of the composite material may comprise one or more of polyetherketone, polyetheretherketone, epoxy, polysulphone or other biocompatible polymer.
The carbon fibre content of the composite material is preferably up to 50% (by volume).
