Abstract

The invention provides a triblet or ring sizes which consists of an elongate flat panel formed of a stiff material such as card. Two opposing elongate edges (9a,9b) of the panel converge from a broad base (9d) towards a tip (9c). A scale (10) is marked onto the panel and graduated in ring sizes corresponding to the distance between the edges (9a) and (9b). A ring can be sized simply by sliding it over the narrow tip until it engages the converging edges (9a) and (9b) and then reading the sizes from the scale (10). The triblet has the advantage of being very cheap to make so that it may be given away and also can be formed into a catalogue for mail order sales.

Description

A TRIBLET DESCRIPTION This invention relates to sizing jewellry rings using a tool known as a triblet or mandrel.
It is conventional in the jewellry trade to size rings using a triblet. A triblet is commonly a frustoconical tool made from metal bearing a scale of ring sizes.
A ring is sized by sliding it onto the triblet until it stops whereupon the ring size can be simply read from the adjacent scale. Where a potential buyer already wears a ring which is of the right size the triblet is a particularly useful tool to determine the correct ring size.
There are circumstances where a potential ring buyer cannot conveniently bring a ring to a jeweller for sizing. These circumstances include catalogue sales of jewellry and situations where the buyer wishes to size a ring unknown to the owner. The present invention seeks to provide a triblet able to alleviate these problems.
Accordingly there is provided a triblet comprising a substantially flat elongate panel formed of a stiff material and having opposing sides converging from a broad base to a narrow tip, said panel bearing a scale extending from the base to the tip bearing a scale of ring sizes corresponding to the distance between the converging edges.
The triblet according to the invention is used much like the conventional conic triblet by dropping a ring over the narrow tip and sliding it until its internal surfaces firmly engage each converging edge.
The triblet according to the invention is made from a stiff material, i.e., a material which does not bend notably under its own weight. A suitable material is card although it is contemplated that plastics, wood or metal could be used. Because the triblet can be made from cheap materials such as card it can advantageously be made to be given away in a jeweller's shop or in a catalogue to be taken home by a customer.
The opposed converging edges of the triblet may be straight, concave curved or stepped. A stepped edge will help to ensure that a user seats a ring perpendicularly relative to the bisector between the converging edges.
A preferred form of the invention has the triblet formed by printing and cutting the triblet into the plastics or card cover or binder of a catalogue for distribution.
A catalogue embodying the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawing.
The drawing shows a rear leaf 1 of an outer cover forming a printed catalogue which includes a plurality of pages 2 retained by staples 3 along a centre fold line 4.
The front cover extends to the left of the centre fold line 4.
The outer cover is formed of card. The rear leaf 1 of the cover has a pocket 5 formed by folded part 6 having a tab (not shown) glued to the cover 1 along the lower edge 7.
The part 6 is folded along a side edge 8 and is integral with the cover 1.
A triblet 9 is provided in the card forming the pocket 6 by making two cuts 9a and 9b in the card extending from a broad base 9d to converge towards a narrow tip 9c and a further cut across the narrow tip 9c. The cuts may completely separate the triblet from the surrounding card or may be perforations or partial kiss-cuts which permit a user to separate the triblet from the surrounding card to raise it into position for use. To facilitate the triblet being lifted from the card the base line 9d may be scored to form a hinge. It will be appreciated that the base may alternatively be cut to permit complete separation of the triblet from the card surround.
A scale 10 is printed or otherwise visibly marked onto the surface of the triblet to extend longitudinally from the base 9d to the tip 9c. The scale is graduated in ring sizes corresponding to the perpendicular distance between the opposing converging edges.

Claims (5)
