Abstract
A drive wheel for the propulsion of a craft either on land or in water comprises a disc 10 with blades 12 inserted into apertures in the disc and which upon rotation of the disc cyclically pivot open and closed by means of a stationary restraining bar 14 restricting blade movement. The opening of the blade 12 is induced by water being forced between the blade and disc as the wheel rotates, whilst the closing of the blade is caused by the blade striking the restraining bar 14. When a number of amphibious wheels are used or by making the restraining bar adjustable greater control of the craft is possible. The inclusion of an additional closing member (17,Fig 6 not shown) permits reverse operation of the wheel. By the addition of a tyre the wheel is capable of land use.
Description
AN AMPHIBIOUS DRIVE WHEEL.
This invention relates to a wheel that will drive a craft
on water, under water or a combination of any.
Paddles, Oars, and Propellors are well known devices for propelling water craft, but these devices can cause a lot of water turbulance and are restricted to their specific task.
According to the presented invention, the amphibious drive wheel will reduce water turbulance, be propelled by manual means as well as from a power source, on land and water and underwater. This is acheived by means of a wheel with swivelling flippers that close and open underwater upon wheel rotation.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
Figure 1 shows in perspective the amphibious drive wheel.
Figure 2 shows the drive wheel face on.
Figure 3 shows the drive wheel side on.
Figure 4 shows a cross section of the swivelling flipper in a
closed position.
Figure 5 shows a cross section of the swivelling flipper in an
open position
Figure 6 shows the reverse mechanism
Figure 7 shows the closing mechanism
Referring to the drawing, the wheel comprises of a disc 10 with a number of shaped apertures cut into the disc. A flipper 12 is inserted in each of these apertures. A pivot 13 is provided at the top and bottom , central to the flippers and fixed to the disc 10. The pivots may be moved off central if this is more beneficial. The flippers 12 are free to swivel but due to the shape of the apperture they will be stopped 20 by the disc at approximately full open position .A static restraining bar 14 is butted up against the disc and flippers, only where the flippers are to remain closed .See fig. 4
As the wheel rotates 1B the flipper 12 is held closed by the restraining bar 14 but where unrestrained it is free to swivel see fig 5 . Inducement to swivel is created by bevelling 15 the leading edge of the flipper and fluting 16 to the disc see fig 4, thus allowing an ingress of water which will force the flipper open . A similar effect may be obtained if the flipper edge is just proud of the disc . The flipper will naturally maintain a fully open position until it reaches the restraining bar 14 where it is closed again ,see fig.7.
The flippers are only allowed to open at maximum usefullness, generally that is with little upward and downward thrust.
However by making the static restraining bar 14 adjustable more downward and upward thrust can be introduced and by using more than one amphibious wheel greater control of the craft is possible.
A reverse mechanism can be incorporated using a closing guide 17 as illustrated on fig 6 but both edges of the flipper would need bevelling and fluting in the disc as for the leading edge.
For land use a tyre would be attached to the wheel circumferance.
Claims (11)

2 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 in which the closure of the flippers may be assisted by a restraining bar.
3 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 that offers little resistance and minimum water turbulence, during rotation, from the closed phase of the flippers.
4 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 that will work in a vertical plane and at any angle from vertical.
5 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 in which the restraining bar is adjustable to provide varying degrees of opening and closing of the flippers.
6 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 in which a closing guide is fitted to permit reverse operation.
7 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 in which the flippers have bevelled edges.
8 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 in which a road tyre is fitted to permit operation on land as well as water.
9 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 but also operating completely submerged.
10 A drive wheel as claimed in claim 1 in which the flippers may be forced open by water pressure.
11 A drive wheel substantially as described herein with references to Figures 1-7 of the accompanying drawing.
