Abstract
231,301. Cable Accessories Co., Ltd., and Reeves, F. H. March 1, 1924. Mounting.-In an electrically operated fan alternate engagements of a toothed element, operated hv the fan, with two coaxial fixed segments effect a reciprocatory movement of the fan support. The fan blades 1 and an electric motor are mounted upon the spindle 2 supported in bearings 4, 5 in a casing which is in turn suported bv stems 6 in a U-shaped bracket 7. The fan can be rotated in a vertical plane about the stems 6 and can move round a vertical axis owing to the support of the bracket 7 on the pedestal 9. A shaft 11 is mounted in the base of the bracket 7 and is connected by a telescopic flexible drive 15 to a worm wheel 13 driven from the fan spindle 2. At the lower end of the shaft 11 is arranged a pawl 22 on a pivot 23 the pawl being kept in frictional engagement with the end of the shaft by a spring washer. This pawl works between a ratchet wheel 25 and an internally toothed ring 24 both of which are fixed to the pedestal. As the fan motor rotates the shaft 11 also rotates but the pawl 22 can only reciprocate while engaging the ratchet teeth of the wheel 25. The fan and bracket 7 are thus moved round on their support. When the pawl reaches the recess 26 in the ring 24 it can make a partial rotation and then engages the teeth on the ring to move the fan and bracket in the reverse direction. When the pawl reaches the recess 27 in the wheel 25 another reversal takes place. By setting the ring 24 by means of the set-screw 28 the distance between the recesses may be varied to change the angle covered by the movement of the fan. In a modification the pawl is replaced by a pair of toothed wheels 30, 32, Fig. 5 and a smooth oscillatory motion is given to the fan.
