Abstract
A support member for use by travellers to reduce neck strain and stiffness, comprises an elongate member shaped to rest on the shoulder or chest of a user and is arched to support either the chin or the side of the head in use. The elongate member a cover which is removable and washable and may be provided in a variety of colours and patterns. Additionally the support a neck strap to keep the support in position during use. The support is rigid or semi rigid and is typically of a plastic material.
Description
NECK SUPPORT
The present invention relates to a device for supporting the head, neck and jaw-line, primarily intended to be used during travelling, but which could also be used in other circumstances.
While travelling, whether by air, train, coach or automobile, passengers, when trying to sleep, can experience difficulty in achieving a comfortable sleeping position whenever a fully reclinable sleeper seat is not available. As a result, travellers often use small travel pillows, which may either be foam or down filled or may be inflatable. Further, aircraft often carry a supply of pillows for longer flights. However, normal filled pillows, can be quite bulky, whether intended to be carried on-board an aircraft or in a passengers luggage, and in order to avoid this problem passengers have occasionally resorted to travel pillows of the inflatable type. However, the latter generally do not provide adequate support and can be uncomfortable to wear. In the event that neither of the known types of travel pillow are available, the passenger will often roll up a piece of clothing to use as a pillow and such practices as often lead to aching and stiff necks since either the support is inadequate or with smaller filled travel pillows, such may not always remain in position.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a head support which is simple and easy to use, which provides adequate support, which is comfortable and easy to use and which is light and small enough~to be readily packed in hand-luggage or stored on board aircraft, coaches or trains, to be available to passengers whenever required.
According to the present invention there is provided a head support comprising a elongate member of rigid or semi-rigid material and having at least a partial arched portion the ends of the elongate member being supportable upon the body of a user and the arched portion engageable with the chin or the side of the head of the user to support the head in use.
Preferably, the elongate member includes a cutout portion for, in particular, accommodating the windpipe/adams apple of the user when supported under the chin and the elongate member may incorporate a neck strap of conventional design to prevent such from falling off during use.
The elongate member may be of a solid rigid or semi-rigid material, for example plastic material, and may, if desired, have a removable sleeve/slip/pouch for containing the elongate member, which sleeve/slip/pouch could be of any suitable material, which could be removed for washing, if necessary. Further, such removable sleeve/slip/pouch could be produced in a variety of colours and/or liverys to enable such to be utilised as a promotional item or to suit the personal tastes of the user. Alternatively, the elongate member could be produced of a composite material having a rigid or semirigid core and having a soft resilient outer surface/coating for gently but firmly supporting the users head/jaw.
The present invention will now be described further with reference to the accompanying drawings which show the elongate head support 10 with a removable cover slip 11 and optional, preferably detachable, neck strap 12. The head support, as described above, can be utilised in either of two positions, namely pos. 1 and pos. 2 as shown in the drawings, i.e. either supporting the chin or resting on the shoulder and supporting the side of the head. Further, the elongate member is also shown in a plan view and elevation view, which show the relative curvature of such. Firstly, in the plan view it can be seen that such is of a substantially rectangular shape having radiussed ends and a cut-out portion of radius a for accommodating the wind-pipe of a user when used under the chin. From the elevation view, firstly the dimension x is determined to be sufficient to be comfortably supported on the upper portion of the chest of the user in the region of the collar bones and the radius of curvature c of the top portion is such as to comfortably support the chin or the side of the head in use.
Whilst the elongate support member of the present invention is suitably of solid material, it is feasible that such could be a hollow object of the same shape and configuration and could even take the form of a portable container or case for accommodating other useful travel items. Of course the container would need to be of a sufficiently light and robust construction for such purpose.
Further, due to the relatively small size and shape of the object, such can be readily accommodated in hand-luggage or conveniently stacked on board a vehicle or aircraft for distribution to passengers as necessary.
The present invention provides a convenient and useful support member which is versatile and easy t use, and which in addition to reduce when travelling could also be utilised in a domestic situation.
