Abstract

230,875. Staude, E. G. Sept. 24, 1923. Controlling different functions by same lever; hydraulic transmission; setting and retaining devices for control- Ling-apparatus.- Comprises control mechanism in which the accelerator pedal, when released beyond the slowrunning position, brings into action a valve which controls a pump worked by the transmission gear between the clutch and the road wheels and so operates the clutch and brake pedals through the fluid pressure thus created. A gear pump is arranged in a casing 18 on the end of the change-speed gear box and comprises a gear wheel 21 rotated by the transmission shaft 9 and gearing with a loose wheel 25 rotating on a fixed eccentric 22. A fixed crescent-shaped member 26 separates the upper parts of the two gear wheels. The pump casing communicates through a port 29 with the gear case and the inlet 31 and outlet 32 are controlled by a sliding valve having a plunger 35 and two collars 37, 38. The accelerator pedal 61, when fully depressed, opens the throttle through an arm 65 and is provided with, a midway stop 62 which normally engages a plate 63 for the slow running position. When the pedal is moved sidewise to release the stop, the pedal rises to the position shown and acts on the valve 35 through a cam 60 and gearing 53, 52, allowing a spring 39 to force the valve to the position shown in which the outlet 32 is closed. The oil is thus forced from the pump into cylinders 40, 68 controlling the clutch and brake respectively through rods 70 acting on arms connected to the clutch and brake pedals. An adjustable relief valve is provided in an extension of the pump chamber. The brake cylinder 68 may be omitted, the increased pressure in the gear pump acting as a brake on the transmission shaft. In a modification two inter-engaging gear wheels of the change-speed gear are used as the oil pump, being enclosed in a separate casing within the gear-box.
