Abstract
To help children identify left and right shoes an impression of the respective hand is applied to the shoe in a position where it can be seen when the shoe is not worn.
Description
FOOTWEAR FOR CHILDREN
The invention relates to footwear for children, in particular young children who cannot yet tell their left foot from their right foot.
It takes a child some time to distinguish between left and right. Children are attending nurseries at a much earlier age and the child to carer ratio is so high that the carer will not have time to put the shoes on each individual child. Children having removed their shoes for games, etc., will put them on again and will often leave the nursery with their shoes on the wrong feet. This is particularly tme in the case of pairs of shoes which look very similar. It is an object of this invention to provide means by which the young child (or a person of any age not able readily to distinguish left from right) can relate each shoe to the appropriate foot.
GB - A 2167592 published in May 1986 discloses a way of dealing with the problem by which the heel area of each shoe incorporates a picture of an animal face in profile with the intention that the child will make the heads face each other and so align the shoes in the proper left and right relation.
The invention is based on the realisation that a child can readily distinguish the profile of each hand and relate it to the respective foot.
According to the invention in one aspect there is provided a pair of items of footwear each having an impression of the respective hand in an area which is visible when the item is not wom.
With such an arrangement each child will be able to overlie the hand displayed on the shoe and match the impression of his own hand with the displayed hand.
The impression will usually show the top plan view of the hand but it may display the underside instead. The thumb may be made prominent, e.g. by making the hand in the shape of a fist.
The hand may be formed on a part of the shoe itself or be on a printed label stuck to the shoes.
In order that the invention may be well understood it will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying sketch of a top plan view of a pair of childrens shoes in the bottom of which there is impressed, (or a separate label applied) showing, the respective hands. Any child or adult capable of putting his or her shoes on the foot cannot fail to get them the right way round.
