Abstract
230,546. Harrison, H. S. Dec. 12, 1923. Packing, metallic; packing, removable casings, containers, or carriers for; draining; glands.- In packing applicable for the rods &c. of pumps and compressors of the type comprising pliable rings 6 of channel section expanded by hard rings, the outer flanges of the rings 6 are approximately cylindrical, while, the inner flanges 6<1> are bevelled in both directions towards the rod. The hard rings are flanged to enter the channels in the rings 6. The spaces 8, 9 are filled with graphite or other lubricant, the spaces 8 communicating with the rod by passages 10, 11. The rings 6 are preferably made of an alloy of lead, tin and antimony and may be made in segments or with saw-cuts, in which case the passages 10, 11 in the hard rings may be dispensed with. The packing is preferably contained in a casing 3, which may be held in place by the pressure of the gland on the packing with or without intervening springs or, as shown, separate glands 17, 18 may be employed for the casing and the packing. In the latter case the bolts 21 of the packing gland 18 are screwed into the flange of the casing gland 17. Springs are placed beneath the nuts of the bolts 21 compression being limited by distance pieces 23. In a stuffing-box for an ammonia compressor, softmetal packing 30 is interposed between the gland 17 and the casing 3 and a cored soft-metal ring 27, with channelled base, is interposed between the casing 3 and a neck ring 26. A lantern ring 24, interposed in the packing, serves for the supply of lubricant and the escape of leakage ammonia. In a stuffing-box for the feed pump of a Diesel engine the casing 3 is dispensed with.
