Description
RENDER OR PLASTER PROFILE
The present invention relates to a profile or bead which is particularly, although not exclusively, applicable for use with external applications of render or plaster.
Render and plaster profiles and beads are well known in the building industry and are used for determining the depth and act as a guide in plaster or render as applied to an existing wall.
There are various applications and thus what is usually referred to as a corner bead is provided to ensure a true straight corner that protects and reinforced render or plaster where it is most vulnerable. Such devices are known which have a base sometimes with two wing portions which are usually connected to the corner of the wall by nails or render material dabs and the wings of the bead are pressed into the dabs. The bead is then plumbed and squared to make sure that there is sufficient thickness of render on each corner of the wall and the render or plaster is then applied using the corner of the bead as the corner of a wall.
There are various ways of attaching the wings to the wall, for example galvanised nails or wire ties can be used on a metal lath. It will be appreciated that the wings of the bead are embedded in the render or plaster if it is used.
Stop beads are also known which are used in a similar manner to provide an end to plaster or render on a wall and similarly bellcast beads provided means for finishing the lower edges of render work.
Once again the beads provide a straight line that protects and also reinforces the render or plaster.
The above are examples of what are known as profiles or beads but in order to avoid confusion in the present specification the term "render profile" will be used to define this type of device.
Profiles and beads of this type are used on corners where there is a re-entrant substantially horizontal wall surface beneath a substantially vertical wall, for example at the lintel of door and window openings.
There is a tendency for rainwater or condensation running down such a vertical wall to be driven by wind or to seep around the horizontal corner and along the horizontal wall surface. This can cause damage to any vertical surface beneath the horizontal surface adjacent to it.
It is known to provide a groove in the lower horizontal surface adjacent the corner of wooden window sills to act as a break and to discourage such horizontal liquid movement beneath the sill. Such a groove is usually referred to as a drip groove.
According to the present invention a render profile construction includes a portion which can form a corner and means for providing a drip groove adjacent thereto.
In one convenient embodiment the construction can include a corner profile adapted to engage the corner of a wall and having a projecting portion extending away from the wall the outer end of which is formed as or is provided with said corner and said drip groove.
Thus such a profile can be used at the lower corner of a lintel with the drip groove arranged parallel with the lower horizontal surface. When the render or plaster is applied it is taken up to the outer end of a profile on both horizontal and vertical walls but with the drip groove left uncovered. When the render is completed the drip groove can act to prevent movement of liquid from the vertical surface along the horizontal surface.
The drip groove may be provided in a capping adapted for connected to the outer end of the projecting portion.
According to another construction according to the invention the render profile can be provided by a first part in the form of a bellcast bead adapted to engage a substantially vertically extending surface of a wall and having a projecting portion extending away from said surface and which forms said corner, and a second part provided by a stop bead which is adapted to engage a substantially horizontal surface of the wall and which also has a projecting portion to provide said drip groove between the two said projecting portions.
The invention also includes a capping member provided with a drip groove and having means for attachment to a render profile.
The invention can be performed in various ways and some embodiments will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic cross-sectional isomeric view of a
window opening construction using a render profile according to
the present invention;
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic cross-sectional view in the
direction of the arrow II of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 of an alternative
construction., and
Figures 4 to 10 are views similar to Figure 2 of further
alternative constructions.
As shown in Figure 1 the invention is applied to a window opening, the window and its frame being indicated by reference numeral 1. A lintel 2 is provided, the outer face 3 of which is substantially vertical and supports a vertical wall 4 constructed of building bricks.
The lower re-entrant surface 5 of the lintel is intended to be covered with rendering as is the vertical surface 3 and the vertical wall 4. As shown in Figure 1 the rendering is indicated by reference numeral 6 on the vertical walls but it has not yet been placed on position on the horizontal lower wall surface 5 of the lintel 2.
A render profile construction according to the invention in the form of a corner bead or profile 7 is shown in position on the horizontal corner between the vertical and horizontal surfaces and its construction and method of attachment to the surfaces is most clearly shown in Figure 2 where the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts to Figure 1. The profile 7 is adapted to engage the corner of the wall and comprises a base portion 8 which has two extensions 9 and 10 which extend at right angles to each other and away from the base 8. A projecting portion 11 is provided extending away from the wall 2 and terminating in a rib 12. The extensions 9 and 10 are provided with openings 13 for the admission of plaster or render.
A portion to form a corner is provided by a capping member 14 in the form of a tube with an open side 15. As will be seen the tube has an outer corner 16 from which a straight side 17 extends in one direction and a similar straight side 18 extends in the other direction. A groove 19 in the side 18 adjacent the corner 16 can act as a drip groove.
The interior dimensions of the tube are arranged so that attachment material in the form of a strip of flexible glass fibre mesh cloth 21 can be located between them. With the mesh 21 in position the capping member 14 is a snap fit over the ridge 12 and the cloth 21.
The capping member can be made from a synthetic plastics material or a metal such a as aluminium provided a snap fit is achieved.
The attachment material can be in any convenient form, for example as expanded metal, or other open materials through which the cement or render can pass.
The base 8 and the capping member 14 can be provided in any convenient length although the usual standard lengths are of 3 metres.
The corner bead or profile is held in position on the corner of the lintel 2 by pins or suitable dabs, as is well known in the industry and which are, therefore, not shown. The plaster or rendering 6 are applied and from Figure 2 it will be seen that the capping member 14 provides a corner 16 up to which the render or plaster can be applied at a set level but leaving the drip groove 19 exposed.
The mesh 21 can be applied as a strip but alternatively it may be provided as a sheet which can be first applied to the wall and before the corner bead or profile is fitted.
With the arrangement described above the bead or profile can be assembled on site with wings of mesh as required. If desired the extensions 9 and 10 can first be secured to the wall and the mesh 21 applied subsequently thus enabling accurate location on the corner.
The base and capping member in this construction are said to be made from a plastics material but they could be manufactured from metal or a combination or metal and plastics material provided the appropriate snap fit is produced between them. The general type of construction described above is as set out in the present Applicants'
British Patent Application No. 94 17287.1 filed on the 25th August 1994 and the embodiment described is merely one of various constructions set out in that Application all of which can be used with the present invention.
Again, the Applicants' British Patent Applications Nos.
94 19080.8 filed on the 22nd September 1994, 94 19560.9 filed on the 27th September 1994 and 94 25189.9 filed on the 12 December 1994 all show constructions in which the present invention can be incorporated and the information set out in the four specifications referred to above is herewith incorporated in to the present Application as ways of carrying the invention into effect.
In alternative constructions the attachment material can be omitted if desired.
With the construction as shown in Figures 1 and 2 water or condensation running down the vertical surface 23 of the render or plaster will tend to be blown round the corner 16 by wind or will tend to seep round the corner onto the horizontal surface 24. The drip groove 19 however prevents the progress of this liquid beyond the outer end of the profile.
Figure 3 shows another construction in which the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts but in this arrangement profile 25 has a projecting portion 26 the outer end 27 of which is solid and incorporates the corner 16, walls 17 and 18 together with drip groove 19 of the construction shown in Figure 2. In this construction the attachment material 21 is held by being fastened directly to the projecting portion 26 by any convenient means, for example adhesive or a mechanical connection.
It will be appreciated that the present invention can be applied to any profile which is to be employed at a corner and the embodiments described above are merely by way of example.
If the rendering is to be relatively thin then the projecting portion from the base may be quite short and may, in fact, be provided by, for example the outer corner of a pair of flanges similar to those shown in Figures 2 and 3 and indicated by reference numerals 9 and 10.
Again, other means of holding profile to walls are known but the drip groove can be incorporated even if, as mentioned above, the projecting portion is very short or incorporated in the base itself.
Such a construction is shown in Figure 4 where the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts. This construction is generally similar to that shown in Figure 2 but the projecting portion 30 is shorter than that shown in Figure 2, the corner 31 is more rounded and the drip groove 32 is larger. It will also be seen that the rounded corner 31 is sufficiently curved to provide what are, in effect, the sides 17 and 18 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 also shows a construction with a short projecting portion 35, the outer end of which provides an outer end 36 which incorporates a rounded corner in a similar manner to the construction shown in Figure 4. In Figure 5 however the construction is solid and there is no capping member. The drip groove is indicated by reference numeral 37. In this construction no attachment material is employed.
Figure 6 and 7 show how a single extension 40 can be used in place of the two extensions 9 and 10 shown in the preceding Figures.
The element which provides the extension 40, base 41 and projecting portion 42 can be made, for example, from a plastics material but is shown as being made from metal. Its outer end 43 is bent rearwardly to provide a catch 44 which can be engaged by a latch portion 45 on a capping member 46 which has a rounded corner 47 similar to that shown in Figure 4 and a drip groove 48. The same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts as in the other Figures.
In Figure 6 the extension 40 is intended for attachment to the substantially vertical wall 3 but in Figure 7 another construction is shown the parts of which are generally similar to that shown in Figure 6 but in which the extension 50 is shaped in relation to the base 41 so that it can be attached to the substantially horizontal surface 5. The same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts to those shown in Figure 6.
It will be seen from the drawings that the mesh 21 is again omitted in these constructions.
Figure 8 shows how the present invention can be applied to a corner profile of known construction. The same reference numerals are used as in the other Figures to indicate similar parts. The corner bead comprises a V-shaped pressing of expanded metal, indicated by reference numeral 55 which has two arms 56 and 57 which respectively engage the walls 3 and 5. The arms 56 and 57 are joined by a U-shaped portion 58, the outer end of which is intended to provide a rounded corner 59. As mentioned above, corner beads of this type are well known in themselves. The present invention provides means for incorporating a drip groove into such a bead and in order to achieve this a capping 60 is provided which is of substantially S-shaped cross-section to incorporate a rounded groove 61 which is shaped and dimensioned to snap over the U-shaped portion 58 and rounded corner 59.The capping can be made of metal or a synthetic plastics material and can either rely upon the resilience of the material of the corner bead or of the material from which it is, itself, manufactured.
Adjacent the groove 61 is a drip groove 62.
Thus, the capping 60 can be supplied as an accessory for use with existing corner beads or it can be sold separately (to convert them to the present invention).
Figure 9 shows another construction which, in effect, employs a bellcast bead and a stop bead connected together. The same reference numerals are used in Figure 9 to indicate similar parts to those in the other Figures.
With this arrangement the profile comprises a bellcast type bead 70 having extensions 71 and 72 for engagement with the walls 3 and 5. The base 73 has a projecting portion 74, the outer end of which forms an angled corner 75. It will be seen that there is a sharp corner 76 between the wall 77 of the projecting portion 74 and the angled corner 75. In the construction being described the parts are made from metal and a stop bead 78 having a projecting portion 79 is fastened by rivets 80 to the extension 72. The groove formed between the projecting portion 74 and the projecting portion 79 acts as a drip groove 81. If desired this construction could also be made from a synthetic plastics material as a single moulding or by welding the two portions together.
Figure 10 shows another construction which is formed essentially from a bellcast bead and stop bead and once again the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts to those shown in previous Figures. With this arrangement the profile consists of two separate parts. The first part being in the form of a bellcast bead 85 which has an extension 86 for fastening to the vertical wall 3, a projecting portion 87, an angled corner 88, a sharp corner 89 and a surface 90. The second part is formed by a stop bead 91 which has an extension 92 to engage the substantially horizontal wall 5, a projecting portion 93 and a lower corner 94. The two parts, 86 and 91 are fastened to their respective walls so that, and due to the angle of the extension 87 of the bellcast bead, the drip groove 96 is formed between them. In the construction shown the parts are located so that they are slightly spaced apart to provide the drip groove 96 but they could be located so that they are closely adjacent or engaged, the shape of the bellcast bead 86 ensuring that the drip groove 96 is formed.
Once again, the parts can be made from metal or synthetic plastics material.
It will be appreciated that in the construction shown in
Figures 1 to 8 the groove can be incorporated in a stop bead or a bellcast bead to prevent water passing around the corner of the bead and into a substantially horizontal surface beyond it.
