Abstract

The sand digger comprises of 2 lower plastic semi-circular digging blades 10, which are glued and bolted to 2 wooden upright stems 12, with a pivot bolt 24, holding together the perspex pivoting pieces 14 and 15, there is a moveable handle system 16 that works in a manner forcing outwards the upright stems 12, and closing inwards the digger blades 10 clamping sand inside when the handle 16 is lifted. The upright stems 12 are urged together by an elastic cord 22, holding the tool in its open condition until the handle 16 is lifted. The use of non-metallic materials ensures that the tool is light in weight.

Description

SAND DIGGER.
This invention relates to a sand digger.
This upright digging tool workes similar to post hole diggers.
Post hole diggers have been around in use for sometime.
They are made of metal and heavy and need both hands to operate The sand digger is light and non-metalic, it is easy to carry.
and needs only one hand and one foot to operate.
The sand digger has been invented for any person who uses a hobby metal detector on sandy beaches, it is an easy to use digging tool to dig holes without any need to bend down.
According to the present invention the sand digger comprises of, 2 lower plastic circular digging blades, which are glued and bolted to 2 wooden upright stems, there is a perspex pivot bolt section and a moveable handle system enabling the digging blades to clamp sand inside.
Drawing sheets enclosed:1/11. Fig 1 shows the sand digger in the open digging position Fig 2 shows the sand digger in the closed lifted position.

11/11 shows fullsize lay out of the pieces needed for the pivot bolt system.
Referring to the drawings, the sand digger comprises of 2 lower plastic circular digging blades 10, which are glued and bolted to the 2 wooden upright stems 12, there is a perspex pivot bolt section 14 and 15, and a moveable handle system 16 and 17.
To operate the sand digger, make sure the horizontal handle 16 is in the downward position, and with the sand digger upright resting on the ground in place to dig, take hold with one hand onto one of the tops of the upright stems 12, then place either the left or the right foot on top of the digger blades 10, and push the blades down into the ground which should be a sandy beach, when the blades 10 are in deep enough, move the hand from the upright stem 12 and hold onto the horizontal handle 16, keeping the foot ontop of the digger blades 10, then lift the handle 16 fully upwards, so that the handle struts 17 are are horizontal and they are now forcing out the upright stems 12 and closing in the bottom digger blades 10, the foot is now taken off and the sand digger is then lifted out of the ground, with the one hand still holding onto the handle 16.
The sand digger is moved to the side away from the hole keeping it upright it is then rested back onto the ground surface, with the hand still held onto the handle 16, push the handle back down, so as to release the small ammount of sand clamped inside the blades 10. The hand is then moved to hold onto one of the tops of the upright stems 12 and the sand digger is now lifted clear, leaving a small sand castle effect on the ground surface, and usually the detected small metal item inside it.

0-90mm is the distance used for the bottom cut angles on the upright stems. The pivot bolt section is kept at a distance of 45mm down from the top edges of the digger blades. The top perspex handle pivots are kept at a distance of 50mm down from the tops of the upright stems. The return elasticated roping is at a distance of 255mm and 330mm down from the tops of the upright stems. The slight tapered upright edges on the digger blades is 12mm at the top and 30mm at the bottom, these measurements are when the digger blades are in the open position the 2 small bolts to secure the upright stems to the digger blades are kept central at 25mm down from the tops of the blades, and 115mm up from the blades bottom edges.
