Abstract

An article for a baby to sit or lie on comprises a mat 10 for changing a baby comprising a main body 20 and sound generating means 30 arranged to generate an audible sound to entertain or relax a baby.

Description

An article for a baby to sit or lie on The present invention relates to an
article for a baby to sit or lie on, for example, a mat for changing a baby.
When the need to change the nappy of a baby arises, the baby may be stressed and may struggle or fidget.
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an article for a baby to sit or lie on, the article comprising a resilient main body with an outer waterproof coating and sound generating means within the waterproof coating and arranged to generate an audible sound to entertain or relax a baby.
In this way the audible sound generated by the sound generating means of the article may entertain or relax a baby. in some way to ease the stress to the baby and to stop it struggling or fidgeting while a nappy is being changed.
Preferably, the sound generating means is electronic.
Preferably, the sound generating means includes a compartment for battery storage Preferably still, the compartment for battery storage is accessible from the underside of the mat. In this way, any leak or spillage is less likely to enter the battery compartment through the access opening.
Preferably, the sound generating means includes an integrated circuit.
Preferably, the sound generating means is arranged to produce a musical sound.
Preferably, the sound generating means is encased in resilient foam.
The fact that the part of the article which incorporates the sound generating means has an outer waterproof coating prevents the sound generating means from being damaged by any liquid, for example, during nappy changing or feeding.
Preferably, the sound generating means is activatable via a switch mechanism. The switch mechanism may be a button. The switch mechanism may be activated by a pressure sensor, and then, the pressure sensor preferably senses a pressure change in the main body of the article.
the article may take any suitable form and may be a high chair seat or liner, for example. In another embodiment, the article is a baby changing Nat. Preferably then, the mat includes an outer section extending along at least part of the periphery of the main body. Preferably still, the outer section is of greater height than the main body. In this way any leak or spillage, for example, caused by the removal of a used Happy, is contained or limited by the outer section. Preferably, the sound generating means is substantially incorporated in the outer section of the mat. Preferably, the switch mechanism is in or attached to the outer section of the mat. This allows the switch mechanism to be activated or deactivated easily.
Preferably the main body comprises a lining encapsulating a foam filling, and preferably, the outer section comprises a lining encapsulating a foam filling. Preferably the inning is a plastics material, and more preferably, the plastics material is polyvinylchloride (PVC).
One embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying Figure, which shows a plan view of a mat constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the Figure, a mat 10 comprises a substantially rectangular shaped body 20 comprising a lining encapsulating a pre-cut foam filling (not shown).
The body 20 comprises an outer lining made from a plastics material such as polyvinylchloride. The foam filing is encapsulated within the outer lining of the mat 10 by a high frequency weld process. The body 20 has an outer section 30 along three sides. The outer section 30 is made from the same materials as the body 20.
A musical chip (not shown) is incorporated in the structure of the mat 10. The chip is formed in the outer section 30 and the chip is activatable by an associated button 40 formed in the outer section 30 of the body 20 of the mat 10. The musical chip and the button 40 are encased in the plastic material to prevent moisture coming into contact with the chip 40. The musical chip 40 may also be encased in a resilient foam to prevent damage to the chip 40.
A battery storage compartment (not shown) is also incorporated into the outer section of the body 20 of the mat 10 to provide electrical power to the musical chip. The battery compartment is situated in an easily accessible location, and is preferably accessed from the underside of the mat 10 so that it can be accessed easily in the event that the batteries incorporated therein require changing.
In use, the mat l0 is laid out on the floor and a baby which requires its Happy changing is laid on the mat 10. The button 40 is then depressed to activate the musical chip thereby providing a tune to relax the baby while it is having its Happy changed.
Once finished, the button 40 is depressed for a second time to deactivate the chip.
In a further embodiment (not shown), the musical chip is activated via a pressure sensor located in the main body of the mat such that the chip is automatically activated when the baby is laid on the mat.
Although the mat 10 shown in the figure is generally rectangular, it is clearly envisaged that the mat could be of any shape provided it fulfils the function of providing a comfortable base on which to safely lie a baby.
Although in the above described embodiment, the musical chip is formed in the outer section 30 of the mat, it is clearly envisaged that the musical chip may be formed in, or attached to, the main body 20 of the mat. s
