Abstract
A decorators table extensible from a closed, travelling configuration (figure 1) to a table configuration (figure 4). The table configuration B is extensible through the unfolding of leaves A to provide a larger work top surface (figure 3). The table configuration is also height adjustable through the use of a lever and peg mechanism locating in cut outs of the telescopic legs (figure 3, J). Casters E may be provided to enable portability and a storage area may also be provided in the base H of the unit.
Description
Page 1, 2398755 )r c Ipl /: The Adjustable Decorators/DIY Table This
invention relates to an adjustable decoratorsfDIY table The professional and Do-lt-Yourself (DIY) decorator requires a surface to rest materials and tools on whilst decorating. It is also mandatory to have a flat horizontal surface for cutting and pasting decorative papers, mouldings and other materials.
According to the present invention there is provided a table that can be stored or transported in a compact position, often referred to in this document as the "collapsed" position. The table is erected by executing the following procedure: 1. remove the work surface; 2. unfold the collapsible legs and lock into pram; 3. replacing the work surface by fixing to the ends of the telescopic legs in a position that is suitable for use by an adult at standing height.
Once erected the table can be simple extended to produce double the usable work surface area, and/or be raised to enable use from a platform or ladder.
Integral to the unit is a storage area to hold tools and materials.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the decorators table in the collapsed position Figure 2 shows an arial view of the base in the collapsed position (work surface removed) Figure 3 shows the table fixed at normal standing height Figure 4 shows the table raised to full height Figure 5 shows the telescopic leg assembly and operation Figure 6 shows the mechanism that locks the top of the four telescopic legs to the work surface Figure 7 shows the leaf extension hinge assembly and operation Figure 8 shows the leaf support arm assembly and operation Figure 9 shows the telescopic leg and leaf support post assembly Figure 10 shows the base and caster assembly Page 2 :iS C 1 P:, 10: Referring to the drawings supplied in this document are the operational factors shown in detail, although not necessarily to scale.
Figures 1 and 3 must be referred to where specific lettered ( e,g. (E)) references are made in the following paragraphs.
To erect the table to the standing operating position it is required that the work surface (B) be unlocked from the base (H) by first operating the catches (C) at either end of the table. The work surface (B) and leaf extension (A) which are held together by the locking catch (F) are separated from the base (H) and placed to one side. Next the telescopic legs (J) are swung into the upright position and fixed by the locking clips (K) on the telescopic leg post, demonstrated clearly in Figure 9. The underside of the work surface has four locating cups that receive the telescopic legs. To lock the legs to the work surface a piston catch assembly is used. Cables on the underside of the work surface are operated to retract these piston catches as shown in detail in Figure 6.
To elevate the table to full height as shown in Figure 4, the leaf extensions must be in the closed position. The telescopic legs can then be operated by first grasping the ends of the work surface. Then pull the work surface release bars (M) upwards which will retract the lever pegs (N (Fig 5)) from the recess cut into the telescopic legs as shown in Figure 5. The work surface is then pulled upwards and at the same time releasing the work surface release bars.
This will extend the telescopic legs in one action until the lever pegs (N (Fig. 5)) locate in the top recesses and lock in the full height position as showr in Figure 4. To drop the table back down to the standing operating position follow the same procedure by positioning the hands at the ends of the table top and grasping the release bars (M) lifting upwards to retract the lever pegs (N (Fig. 5)). Then lower the work surface, releasing the bars (M) allowing the lever pegs (N (Fig. 5)) to locate in the lower recesses of the telescopic legs and lock in position.
To extend the work surface to full length the leaf locking catches (F) must first be released. To enable the leaf extensions (A) to be used the feat extension hinge (D) must be operated in the order shown in Figure 7. This action is designed to move the leaf extensions away from the work surface, then draw the leafs and work surface tightly together. To support the leaf extensions the leaf support arms (L) are unfolded and locked into place, as clearly shown in Figure 8. The table is now suitable for handling longer lengths or multitudes of materials.
Removable casters are fitted to the base of the table which provide mobility on suitable surfaces. If the casters are not required they may be removed from the table and stored. Permanent cups are retained to the underside of the table base so that the castors can be easily reinserted at any time. Th construction of the castor and cup fixture is shown in Figure 10 $
