Abstract

A communication system which provides a mobile wireless radio network to indoor, outdoor or difficult areas. The system has one or more wireless network cells (WNC) which each have their own power supply. The WNC comprises an enclosure 1 with exchangeable side panel 2 and telescopic mast/pole 3. The enclosure is made from a robust light weight material to house the communication equipment 4. The telescopic mast/pole 3 is fixed to the enclosure 1, through which the communication cable 6 passes from the communications antenna 7 to the communications equipment 4. The communication cable 6 is connected to the communication equipment 4 via a cable management system 8. Carrying handle(s) 9 or strap 10, make for easy repositioning.

Description

1 2397470
UN-TETEERED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND APPARATUS
An apparatus and communication system to provide a mobile wireless radio network to indoor, outdoor or difficult areas. The system comprises, one or a number of wireless network cells (WNC) which are self contained, independently powered, communication modules which can be relocated and reconfigured to meet the requirements of the area being covered.
Whilst wireless networks are not new, they are based on a wired backbone infrastructure, with access points for mobile users to connect to the wired network.
This structure does not lend itself to open or difficult areas where the use of a wired backbone may not be sufficient or practical (such as a building site or large internal or external open area such as a conference centre, exhibition hall or sporting arena) or in cases where the wireless network is required for a short period of time, hence consuming time and resources for configuration and set-up. The use of one or a number of WNC can eliminate this by allowing for the creation of a wireless network anywhere one may be required. This is achieved by having the WNC self-contained with independent power supplies and easily reconfigurable to meet the demands of the location and application or data traffic and type to which it may be subjected.
The object of the WNC is to provide a mobile, fully reconfigurable wireless network without the need for a wired backbone infrastructure.
Each WNC comprises an enclosure containing the required communication equipment. The enclosure would preferably be made from steel but may instead be made from any suitable robust material to provide a housing for the communication equipment. The enclosure is provided with carrying handle(s) and strap(s) which allow it to be carried in one hand or over the shoulders, or fixed/mounted into position. A telescopic or fixed mast/pole is mounted to the enclosure upon which the communications antenna is mounted. The telescopic or fixed mast/pole would preferably be made from aluminium but may instead be manufactured from carbon timbre, robust plastics material or be replaced entirely by a communications antenna.
The main advantage of the WNC is its portability; therefore all noncommunication equipment should preferably be made from lightweight but robust material.
To provide for portability and easily reconfigure, each WNC is provided with its own independent power supply. This does not however, preclude the use of a single power supply being used to provide power to a number of WNC such as a small generator.
The power supply would preferably be any type of rechargeable battery which if required can be topped up with a solar panel and /or wind turbine to suit the location of the WNC. Where appropriate top-up power supplies can be mounted to the mast.
Where used it is envisaged that such power supplies could provide enough power to maintain the battery and keep the unit running indefinitely. However, this would be subject to individual locations. A timer switch is provided within the WNC to provide on/off cycles or timed functions for the communications equipment as required by the configuration. r
A preferred embodiment of the WNC will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE I. Shows a perspective view of the WNC when closed FIGURE 2. Shows a front elevation ofthe WNC FIGURE 3. Internal View of WNC FIGURE 4. Shows a side elevation ofthe WNC Referring to the drawing, the WNC comprises an enclosure (1), with exchangeable side panel (2) and telescopic mast/pole (3). The enclosure can be locked, for example, by use of padlocks, key or latches (not shown). The enclosure provides the housing to the communication equipment (4), power supply (not shown) and timer unit (5). The telescopic mast/pole provides a platform on which to mount the communications antenna and/or additional power supply equipment such as a wind turbine and solar pane] (not shown).
The exchangeable side panel is used to provide alternative connections (not shown) for communications antenna, communications devices, power supplies, timers or other electronic/electrical devices (not shown) as required in the set-up of the system.
The telescopic mast/pole is fixed to the enclosure, through which the communication cable (6) passes from the communications antenna (7) to the communications equipment. Figure 3 shows the communication cable connected to the communication equipment via a cable management system (8) The communications equipment can be powered directly by an independent power supply such as a battery (not shown) or external power or via a timer unit to turn on/off or provide required dedicated functions as necessary.
Figure 4 shows the position of carrying handle(s) (9) and or strap(s) (10) allowing the unit to be carried and repositioned/mounted as necessary. s
