Description
HYDRAULIC FITTINGS
This invention relates to hydraulic fittings and in particular to fittings for joining flexible hoses to rigid pipes and methods of assembling such fittings.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple and low cost method for joining a flexible hydraulic hose to a rigid metal pipe.
Thus according to the present invention there is provided a method of joining a flexible hydraulic hose to a rigid metal pipe comprising: forming a raised shoulder on the rigid pipe to define a nipple end portion of the pipe forward of the raised shoulder; forming an annular pipe sleeve with an internal bore therethrough to receive the rigid pipe and flexible hose, the sleeve having a first abutment adjacent one end of the sleeve for contact with one side of the raised shoulder and a second abutment facing in the opposite direction to the first abutment for contact with the end of the flexible hose; placing the sleeve over the nipple end portion of the rigid pipe with the first abutment adjacent said one side of the shoulder; pushing the free end of the flexible hose into the sleeve so that the nipple end portion of the rigid pipe enters the bore of the hose and the free end of the hose contacts the second abutment; crimping the sleeve onto the hose, and
forming said one end of the sleeve into contact with the other side of the shoulder to draw the first abutment into contact with said one side of the shoulder to complete the sealing of the hose to the pipe.
The principal advantage of the above method are that no complex forming operations of the sleeve are required during assembly of the joint only the simple crimping of the sleeve over the hose and the forming of the sleeve into contact with the other side of the pipe shoulder.
These simple metal forming operations can be performed without complex tools making the method particularly suited to low volume production where the cost of complex tooling cannot be justified.
The invention also provides a jointing arrangement between a flexible hydraulic hose and a rigid metal pipe in which: the rigid pipe has a raised shoulder formed thereon to define a nipple end portion of the pipe forward of the raised shoulder; an annular pipe sleeve with an internal bore therethrough receives the rigid pipe and flexible hose therein, the sleeve having a first abutment adjacent one end of the sleeve which contacts one side of the raised shoulder and second abutment facing in the opposite direction to the first abutment which contacts the end of the flexible hose with the nipple end portion of the pipe in the hose bore; the sleeve is crimped onto the hose, and said one end of the sleeve is formed into contact with the other side of the shoulder to draw the first abutment into contact with said one side of the shoulder to complete the sealing of the hose to the pipe.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures I and 2 show the rigid pipe end and jointing sleeve respectively of the jointing arrangement of the present invention; Figure 3 shows the jointing arrangement partly assembled, and Figure 4 shows the jointing arrangement fully assembled.
Referring to the drawings the jointing arrangement in accordance with the present invention comprises three basic components, the rigid metal pipe 10, the flexible hydraulic hose 1 1 and the jointing sleeve 12.
The rigid metal pipe 10 has formed thereon a raised shoulder 13 which defines forward of the shoulder a nipple end portion 14 for entry into the bore 15 of the flexible hose 11. As can be seen from the drawings, the nipple portion is of a reduced diameter compared to the normal external diameter of the rigid pipe 10 but this is not necessarily the case and depends on the relative size of the hose bore and the rigid pipe external diameter.
The jointing sleeve 12 is provided with a first annular abutment 16 for contact with one side 17 of shoulder 13. A second abutment 18 is formed on sleeve 12 which faces in the opposite direction to abutment 17 and which is contacted by the end of hose 11.
The end portion 19 of sleeve 12 which initially overhangs the shoulder 13 on the rigid pipe 10 is eventually formed down onto the external surface of tube 10 to contact the side 20 of shoulder 13 to in turn draw the sleeve 12 into contact with the side 17 of shoulder 13.
The cylindrical sleeve 12 is also crimped at 21 and 22 onto hose 11 to seal the sleeve to the hose.
The jointing fitting described above is assembled as follows.
Firstly the raised shoulder 13 is formed on the rigid pipe 10 together with the reduced diameter nipple end portion 14 of the rigid pipe.
The sleeve 12 is also formed with its first and second abutments 16 and 18 respectively for contact with the shoulder 13 and the end of hose 1 1.
The sleeve 12 is then placed over the end nipple portion 14 of pipe 10 with the first abutment 16 in contact with the side 17 or shoulder 13.
The hose 11 is then pushed into the sleeve 12 so that the nipple portion 14 enters its bore and the end of the hose contacts the second abutment 18 of the sleeve.
The sleeve 12 is then crimped onto the hose I I and the end portion 19 of the sleeve is formed onto the pipe 10 to contact the other side 20 of the shoulder 13 and thus draw the first abutment 16 on the sleeve 12 into sealing contact with the side 17 of the shoulder thus completing the sealing of the hose to the pipe.
As will be appreciated the above jointing arrangement is a particularly simple and efficient way to join a rigid pipe to a flexible hose and does not require the provision of any expensive metal forming equipment since the crimping of the sleeve to the hose and the forming of the sleeve onto the tube can be performed by inexpensive equipment.
