Combined phonographs and picture-displaying apparatus.-The subject of a gramophone or like record is illustrated by pictures which are brought successively into view by the movement of the stylus tracking the record or equivalent means engaging a track moving synchronously with the record, the stylus controlling the movement of shifting means which directly or indirectly operate or control the pictures. As shown, the pictureprojecting apparatus comprises a casing 13, Fig. 2, supported at one end on the turntable spindle and at the other on two adjustable diverging legs 55 secured to the casing cover 15 which carries telescopic members 57, 58 with a projector lens opposite a lamp 64 and reflector 65 arranged in the casing. The series of pictures 470, Fig. 5, are arranged in a circle on a disc 47, mounted by means of two unequally-positioned pins 49 on a flange 44 of a sleeve 41 carrying also a ratchet wheel 37. The picture disc is secured to the flange 44 by a disc 50, Fig. 6, with tongues 52 adapted to engage through corresponding slots in the picture disc and flange when the slots 51 in the securing disc 50 are applied over the pins 49. The successive pictures correspond to successive parts of the sound record, and are intermittently moved opposite a slot 61 in an adjustable plate 60 by means controlled by the stylus and comprising a two-part member 3, 7, Fig. 7, mounted on the turntable spindle and resting frictionally on the record so that a ratchet-toothed edge 4 thereon constantly bears against the stylus. As the stylus is traversed inwardly by the record groove it clears the teeth 4 successively, permitting successive small rotary movements of the members 3, 7 at each of which a serrated annulus 8 acts on a weighted pawl 33, Fig. 8, pivoted to an arm 32 on a shaft 16 to turn the shaft sufficiently to displace a spring-pressed flanged sleeve 19 with a face cam 21 clear of a stop-piece 30 and thus permit teeth 26 on the sleeve to be moved by the spring 23 into engagement with pins 27 on a rubber-tyred disc 28 sleeved on the shaft 16 and constantly driven by the record. The shaft thereby makes one complete rotation whereby the ratchet wheel 37 is driven, to position the next picture, by a tooth 36 on a collar 35, and the pawl 33 and arm 32 are brought to the position shown in Fig. 10 when the pawl falls into engagement with the serrations 8 again, the cam 21 having now disengaged the teeth 26 from the pins 27. In modifications, the pictures could be arranged on a band secured to the margin of the shifting means 7 and viewed by transmitted light, or the shifting means may control a relay which acts electrically, mechanically or otherwise to move the pictures projected by devices at a distance.
