Dry processes of extracting refractory and other metals; briquetting and agglomerating processes; alloys.-A process for the production of metals or alloys, particularly of low carbon content, for example chromium, iron, manganese, titanium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, and their alloys, from oxides or ores, comprises the indirect reduction of the ore by means of a reducing agent which is itself formed during the operation from oxides and carbonaceous reducing agents. The ore is charged into a furnace along with briquettes or lumps of a mixture of carbon, and one or more oxides or oxidized compounds of aluminium, magnesium, barium, calcium, silicon, manganese, boron, chromium, zinc, &c., and with slag-forming or other ingredients such as lime, silica, fluor-spar, sulphides of calcium, aluminium, magnesium, &c. The carbon may be in the form of charcoal, graphite, anthracite, coal, lignite, coke, lignite coke, peat, sawdust, &c., and if it is other than a coke, the briquettes may be coked before use. The binding agents may be tar, marl, limewater, clay, water-glass, cement, sulphite lye, &c. The composition of the charge may be such that the slag formed contains considerable proportions of lime, magnesia, or alumina; and it may be utilized as an ingredient of the briquettes. If the briquettes are used in excess in the charge, chromium alloys, for example, may be obtained containing a high percentage of aluminium. Iron alloys containing silicon, manganese, aluminium, chromium, &c., may be obtained by using briquettes in excess of iron ore, the iron alloying with elements reduced out of the briquettes, and the product being subsequently refined for the reduction of the carbon and sulphur contents, if necessary. The quantity of carbon in the briquettes should generally be less than that required for the complete reduction of the oxides therein.
