Abstract

A waste flat glass sheet "A " is taken to a heat source "B" and placed on a former "C" or prepared surface such that with the addition of heat the waste sheet will soften and assume the shape or texture of the former that it has been placed on. When the heat is removed from the heat source, "A" is allowed to cool so that it may be safely removed. The waste glass sheet may be clear or coloured.

Description

REPROCESSING OF WASTE CLEAR OR
COLOURED FLAT SHEET GLASS FOR RE-USE
WITHOUT REDUCTION TO GULLET
This invention relates to the reprocessing of waste clear or coloured flat sheet glass for re-use without reduction to Gullet.
Clear or coloured flat sheet glass is currently available in manufactured machine rolled or float glass sheets. The sale of these stock sheets necessitates cutting to the required size. This leaves off-cuts that are either landfilled, returned to the manufacturer, or returned to a reprocessor for crushing to Gullet prior to transportation to a glass manufacturer for reintroduction
into the hot process of new flat sheet production.
Equally new sheets that are made produce a percentage of seconds, or glass that is required to be rejected and is also returned for reprocessing.
Redundant window glass removed from window frames or buildings is either landfilled or crushed by a reprocessor
( According to the present invention, the waste or rejected flat sheet glass is taken to a heat source that has had the internal surface suitably prepared or a former inserted so that with the introduction of heat the waste glass placed upon it will soften to
match the profile of the prepared heat source base or former.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig. 1 shows the waste flat sheet glass.
Fig. 2 illustrates the glass placed in the heat source.
Fig. 3 illustrates the glass flattened out and following the contours of the base or former after the application of heat.
( Referring to the drawing.
A heat source 'B' is fitted with a pre-shaped former or profiled medium " C " into its base. The waste glass sheet 'A' is placed on top of the former 'C'. Heat is then applied to 'B' such that the sheet 'A' softens and assumes the shape or pattern of the pre-
shaped former 'C'. The heat source is then turned off and allowed to cool to a temperature and at a rate that is safe for 'A' to be handled and removed.

Claims (7)

1. A waste glass flat sheet surface re-texturising process where the waste glass sheet is placed on a profiled former inside a heat source, heat is applied and the glass sheet softens sufficiently to assume the shape of the profiled former.
2. A waste glass flat sheet, surface retexturising process as claimed in claim 1 whereby the former is so designed to impart different textured finishes on the surface of the waste glass.
3. A waste glass flat sheet surface re-texturising process as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 whereby the former is so designed to impart a regular profile and texture to the waste glass at the same time.
4. A waste glass flat sheet surface re-texturising process as claimed in claims 1 to claim 3, whereby the former is designed such that a specific design (lettering and/or graphic) or logo or trademark is imparted onto the surface of the waste glass.
- f
5. A waste glass flat sheet surface re-texturising process as claimed in claim 1 to claim 4 wherein the waste glass is obtained from waste window glass previously in window frames or removed from current or redundant buildings and are not off-cuts.
6. A waste glass flat sheet surface re-texturising process as claimed in claims 1 to claim 5 wherein the waste glass is obtained from sources other than as specified in claims 5.
7. A waste glass flat sheet surface re-texturising process substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
