Abstract

A key safe (1) combined with a breathalyser unit (2), designed to secure a set of car keys from a person attempting to drive a vehicle illegally under the influence of alcohol. On deposit of the car keys the driver enters a time limit and a temporary unlocking code via the keypad (3). The driver may retrieve the car keys by entering his/her unlocking code whilst providing a breath sample into the breathalyser. The key safe will only unlock if the unlocking code is valid and the breath sample is below the legal alcohol content limit. Once unlocked the door (4) to the key safe may be opened. The key safe guardian may also open the key safe using a permanent unlocking code and providing a breath sample. If no unlocking codes are entered before the time limit expires, the key safe automatically unlocks.

Description

1 2392201
Drink-drivers Key Safe This invention relates to a type of safe combined with a breathalyser which is designed to secure a set of car keys from a driver who may attempt to operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
The legal alcohol limit as stated in the 1967 Road Safety Act is 80mg of alcohol per lOOml of blood. This is equivalent to 351lg of alcohol in 1 00ml of breath, and 107mg of alcohol in 1 00ml of urine. Driving under the influence of alcohol may therefore be both dangerous and illegal.
If a person would like to consume a quantity of alcohol and still be able to drive legally, a self test breathalyser can be used to column that the person is under the legal limit. Also, if a person was intending to consume a quantity of alcohol and then not drive it may be feasible to pass the car keys to another person who would then withhold the keys if it is considered that the intending driver is over the legal alcohol limit and/or not fit to drive. Both scenarios require sound human judgement in order to prevent a driver from operating a vehicle whilst unfit to drive. This judgement may be compromised within an environment where alcohol is available.
Accordingly, this invention provides a key safe designed to secure a set a car keys from a driver who may be over the legal alcohol limit and/or not fit to drive.
The key safe is modelled on an ordinary type of safe with a number of significant modifications. Those being the combined breathalyser unit and various ways of unlocking the safe and gaining access to its contents.
Initially, a set of car keys are deposited in the safe. This could be at a persons house, a restaurant, a public house or any other place where alcohol is available. The person who owns the car keys ('driver') then inputs both a time limit (i.e. 12 hours) and an unlocking code (i.e. a four digit number) into the key safe which is then stored temporarily in the key safes memory. The person who owns the key safe ('guardian') also has an unlocking code to open the key safe which is stored permanently in the key safes memory.
Retrieval of the car keys may now occur via one of three means; 1. After the time limit has expired the key safe will automatically unlock. Once the key safe unlocks Me temporary unlocking code set by the 'driver' is erased.
2. The 'driver' can type in his/her unlocking code, but at the same time must supply a breath sample into the breathlyser. The key safe will only unlock if the breath sample
is under the legal alcohol content limit or a lower limit programmed into the key safe by the 'guardian'. Once the key safe unlocks the temporary unlocking code set by the driver' is erased.
3. The 'guardian' can type in his/her unlocking code, but at the same time must supply a breath sample into the breathalyser. The key safe will only unlock if the breath sample is under the legal limit or a lower limit programmed into the key safe.
Once the key safe unlocks the temporary unlocking code set by the 'daver' is erased, but the permanent code set by the 'guardian' is not erased.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings; À Figure 1 This shows a 3D view of the key safe with the door slightly open. The diagram points out Me significant features of the invention.
As shown in Figure 1, the key features of this invention are the main body of the key safe (I), the breathalyser unit (2), the key pad (3) and the key safe door (4).
