Filter Device for Rainwater DownPiPes Field of the Invention
5 The present invention concerns improvements in and relating to filter devices for rainwater downpipes such as are used to separate out leaves, moss and other debris and mitigate against blockage of the downpipe and drains of a building.
Background to the Invention
A variety of filter devices have been proposed in the art for use in conjunction with rainwater downpipes. The majority of these are adapted for use at the puttering level to prevent leaves, moss and other debris that runs off from the roof of the building into the puttering from entering into the top of the downpipe, Buttering and 15 drains of a building. Whereas such devices serve their intended purpose they do not allow for ease of maintenance cleaning by a user since they are inherently inaccessible, being located at the level of the roof/guttering. Furthermore, they serve no purpose other than to trap the foliage and debris.
20 In more recent years the need for user access has begun to be addressed and filter devices have begun to be designed for installation lower down on the downpipe with access for cleaning. An example of such an arrangement is shown in DE 3,518,302. In that patent application the filter screen is arranged in the interior of the downpipe. Filter devices such as this are, however, not compact and not 25 optimally efficient and not versatile in operation and have not, in practice, been widely taken up.
There remains a need for an improved filter device for gutter downpipes that is compact, efficient and versatile and suitably economical and easy to install and 30 maintain.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a filter device 35 for a gutter downpipe / drainpipe that is adapted to be fitted in line to the gutter downpipe and which comprises a tubular body formed of an upper section, a middle
section and a lower section, the upper section when mounted to a downpipe, being moveable longitudinally upwardly of the downpipe away from the lower section, there being provided an integral filter element within the middle section between the upper and lower sections, the middle section being removable upon moving apart 5 the upper and lower sections to enable leaves, mould or indeed any detritus to be cleared from the filter element and the filter element to be replaced.
Preferably the body of the filter device further comprises a middle section between the upper and lower sections in which the filter element is integrally formed.
Preferably the filter element is conical or frusto-conical in shape or is more generally basket shaped suitably with sides that taper inwardly towards the lower end of the filter device and suitably the filter element has it axis substantially aligned with or parallel to the longitudinal axis of the downpipe in use.
Particularly preferably the filter device is provided with a channel to divert at least part of the water flowing through the downpipe and the filter device and out through a lateral aperture to feed to a water storage tank or other facility. Suitably the channel and aperture are formed in the lower section of the filter device.
Particularly preferably the filter device is provided with an adjustment means for selectively opening or closing the channel. This adjustment means may comprise a closure flange / valve formed on the middle or upper sections of the filter device and moveable to open or close the channel. In the illustrated preferred embodiment the 25 closure means is formed as a flange on a middle section and which rotates with rotation of the middle section to move to radially align or move out of alignment with an opening formed in the lower section that opens to the channel. The opening is formed in an upstanding annular inner wall within the lower section which may suitably be concentric with the outer wall of the lower section. The inner wall is 30 suitably of an inside diameter to substantially encompass the maximum outside diameter of the filter element whereby water flowing down through the downpipe will pass through the filter element and substantially all fall down within the bore of the inner wall, only entering the space between the inner wall and outer wall should the inner wall opening not be occluded by the flange / valve of the middle section.
( 3 According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a filter device for a gutter downpipe that is adapted to be fitted in line to the gutter downpipe and which comprises a tubular body formed of an upper section and a lower section, the upper section when mounted to a downpipe, being moveable relative to the lower section, there being provided a filter element within the filter device that is removable to enable leaves, mould or indeed any detritus to be cleared from the filter element and the filter element to be replaced, wherein the filter device further has a separate outlet channel to enable diversion of flow to a water storage tank or other facility and means to selectively open and close access to the 10 channel. The means to selectively open and close access to the channel is suitably manually adjustable by rotation of the upper section relative to the lower section.
In a further refinement to the filter device it suitably is provided with a pipe reduction section at least at the top and suitably also at the bottom. The pipe reduction 15 sections may be formed to different diameter sizes and section shapes to suit different sizes / shapes of downpipe whereby the filter device body is generally formed to a standard size and the pipe reduction sections enable adaptation of the fitment of the filter device body to any of a range of different diameters / sectional shapes of downpipes.
Brief Description of the Drawinas
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, 25 wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention in exploded apart form; 30 Figure 2 is a side elevation view of the filter device of Figure 1 assembled together; Figure 3 is a perspective view of an upper section of the filter device body; 35 Figure 4 is a perspective view of a middle section of the filter device body; and
( 4 Figure 5 is a perspective view from the underside of a lower section of the filter device body.
5 Description of the Preferred Embodiment
As illustrated, the preferred embodiment of the filter device comprises a main tubular body of three sections, an upper section 1, middle section 2 and lower section 3.
The filter device body 1,2,3 mounts to the existing Buttering downpipe of a building, 10 of which short upper and lower lengths 4 are shown in the illustration.
The girth of the filter device body 1,2,3 is substantially greater than that of the average downpipe and although the upper and lower sections 1, 3 have an arcuate inward tapering form upwardly and downwardly, respectively, each also is provided 15 with a respective reduction section 6 having reduced diameter portion 7 of diameter to suiVcorrespond to that of the downpipe 4 to which it mounts.
The filter device body is suitably secured to the wall by a large clip 8 of similar form to the clips 8 that secure the down pipe 4 to the wall.
In one example of the preferred embodiment the main body of the filter device which comprises the upper, middle and lower sections 1,2,3 suitably has a girth of 159mm and length of 248mm. The reduction sections 6 may be used to fit the filter device body 1,2,3 to downpipes of the order of 68mm up to 125 mm in diameter or, using 25 different reduction sections 6, to other sizes of downpipe 4.
The main body of the filter device 1,2,3 is, as shown, not strictly coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the downpipe 4 but with its own axis closely parallel to the longitudinal axis of the downpipe 4.
The middle 2 and upper 1 sections of the filter device body are, in use, moveable upwardly away from the lower section 3 by telescopic sliding of the upper section 6 for a distance up the length of the downpipe 4. The purpose of this is to enable the middle section 2 to be removed and replaced at will whilst the majority of the filter 35 device remains in situ on the downpipe 4. The middle section 2 is a portion of the filter device body that incorporates the filter element, here shown as a substantially
frusto-conical sieve basket 10 that is concentric with the middle section of the filter device body and which inwardly tapers downwardly. The filter elemenVsieve basket 10 traps leaves and other detritus flowing with the rainwater down through the downpipe 4 and needs to be removed to be emptied of the leaves and other 5 detritus at intervals.
By the simple expedient of enabling the middle section 2 with filter element 10 to be removed and replaced at will by telescopically sliding the upper section 1 upwardly, and lifting out the middle section 2, regular cleaning of the filter device 10 is made 10 very easy. By locating the filter device at a height up the downpipe that is within ready reach of a person standing at ground level, there are no awkward access problems and need for any ladder, and the cleaner can remove, clean and replace the middle section 2 with the integral filter element 10 with very little effort.
15 In the example preferred embodiment illustrated it is suitable to allow a clearance of at least 70mm between the top of the upper reduction section 6 and the wall mounting clip above it in order to allow sufficient space for backing off of the upper section 6 from the lower 3 and middle 2 sections for removal of the middle section 2.
20 In addition to being relatively simple to install, discreet in appearance and easily accessed and cleaned, the filter device of the present invention is further configured to allow for selective diversion of rainwater from the downpipe. To this end, the filter body is provided with an outlet channel 11 leading to an outlet aperture 12 and which may suitably be coupled to a hose or other pipework to deliver rainwater from 25 the device to any desired appliance or collection container. Water is selectively diverted to the channel 11 by selective opening of an aperture/cutout 13 formed in an inner partitioning wall 14 that is defined in the lower section 3 of the filter device body. The inner partitioning wall 13 is an upstanding annular wall of lesser diameter than the outer wall 14 of the filter device body lower section 3 and which is 30 suitably substantially concentric with the outer wall 15 and of a diameter that substantially encompasses the broadest diameter of the sieve basket 10 to ensure that the majority or all of the rainwater falling down through the downpipe 4 and passing through the openings of the filter elemenVsieve basket 10 is normally constrained to flow down within the bounds of the inner wall 14 and not fall between 35 the inner wall 14 and outer wall 15. Accordingly, flow of rainwater can only pass out to the channel 11 if the aperture/cutout 13 is unobstructed. Here the
( 6 cleaner/operator has the choice to manually select closure or opening of the cutouVaperture 13 by relatively rotating the middle section 2 of the filter device body in order to align or de-align a closure flange 16 that is formed on the middle section 2 extending downwardly therefrom and riding over the surface of the inner wall 13.
The ease of adjustment of the opening and closure of the aperture 13 for the channel 11 enables it to be readily used for selectively diverting flow to an external container, for example. The design of the apparatus avoids the need for any special tools, spanners or wrenches for operation or maintenance.
Whereas the present invention is described above with respect to one preferred embodiment thereof, numerous alternative embodiments are conceivable within the scope of the invention
