Abstract

A prosthetic device, such as a femoral or tibial knee component, has a peg 11 for use as a fixator. The peg comprises two part-cylindrical or part frusto-conical portions 12 and 13 joined together by a web. Each part cylindrical or part frusto-conical portion defines more than a hemi-cylinder or hemi-frusto-cone, respectively.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO
PROSTHETIC DEVICES
This invention relates to a prosthetic device and to a method of attaching such 5 a device to a bone.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a prosthetic device having a peg for use as a fixator, the peg comprising two part cylindrical or part frusto-conical portions joined together, each part-cylindrical or pert 10 frusto-conical portion defining more than a hemi-cylinder or hemi-frusto-cone, respectively. Preferred and/or optional features of the invention are set out in claims 2 to 7 inclusive.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of attaching a prosthetic device to a bone, comprising the steps of: (a) drilling two overlapping holes in the bone, and (b) inserting the peg of a prosthetic device according to the 20 first aspect of the invention into the two holes.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example,
( with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a prosthetic device according to the present invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of a prosthetic device according to the present invention, and Figures 3 and 4 are perspective views of modified pegs for use win the 10 prosthetic devices shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings, the prosthetic device shown therein is in the form of a femoral lmee component 10 having a fixation peg 11 for aiding fixation of the component 10 to a bone. The component 10 is typically formed IS of cobalt chrome molybdenum alloy, titanium alloy, stainless steel or ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.
The peg 1I has two part-cylindrical portions 12 and 13 which are joined together by a short web portion 14 to thereby define a figure-of-eight shape in cross 20 section. Each part-cylindrical portion 12, 13 defines more than a hemi-cylinder and the axes of the two portions 12 and 13 are parallel to one another. The free ends of the two part-cylindrical portions 12 and 13 are tapered to help lead the peg 11 into
( two overlapping drilled holes in the bone.
The femoral component 10 also has patterned surfaces is for contact with the bone. These patterned surfaces 15, as shown, comprise a plurality of adjoining, raised pyramidical portions 16.
In order to fix the femoral component I O to die femur, two overlapping holes are drilled in the femur using a simple drill guide with a standard drill. Preparation of the bone is therefore relatively simple and yet the peg 11 will provide significant to resistance to rotation due to its overall non-circular cross-section.
Figure 2 shows a similarly shaped peg 11' on a tibial knee component 17.
Figure 3 shows a modified peg 18 comprising two part frusto-conical portions 15 19 and 20 joined together by a web 21. The part frustoconical portions 19 and 20 each define more than a hemi-frusto-cone and have their longitudinal axes parallel to one another.
Figure 4 shows another modified peg 18' similar to that shown in Figure 3, 20 but each part frusto-conical portion 19', 20' has three grooves 22 extending parallel to the axis of die part frusto-conical portion to enhance fixation.
The embodiments described above are given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.

Claims (9)

( CLAIMS
1. A prosthetic device having a peg for use as a f xator, the peg comprising two 5 part-cylindrical or part frusto-conical portions joined together, each part-cylindrical or pert frusto-conical portion defining more than a hemi-cylinder or hemi-frusto-cone, respectively.
2. A prosthetic device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the two part-cylindrical or 10 part frusto-conical portions have their longitudinal axes parallel with one another.
3. A prosthetic device as claimed in claim I or claim 2, wherein at least one of the part-cylindrical or part frusto-conical portions has one or more grooves to enhance fixation.
4. A prosthetic device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a patterned surface for contact with the bone.
5. A prosthetic device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the patterned surface 20 comprises a plurality of raised pyramidical portions.
6. A prosthetic device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in the form I
( of a tibial knee component.
7. A prosthetic device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, in the form of a femoral knee component.

8. A prosthetic device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
9. A method of attaching a prosthetic device to a bone, comprising Me steps of: 10 (a) drilling two overlapping holes in the bone, and (b) inserting the peg of a prosthetic device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims into the two holes.
