Abstract
Two east components 10 & 20 are brought into abutment with each other whilst aligning with each other a first aperture 23 & 25 in each component. A die tool 53 is inserted through the aligned first apertures, pressure is applied on external surfaces of the components thereby deforming the components and forcing the components against the inserted die tool. The pressure is stopped and the die tool then withdrawn. The components also comprise second 21 & 22 and third apertures which are brought into alignment when the components are brought into abutment and through which second 62 and third die tools are inserted. The interior surfaces of these apertures are also forced into contact wit respective die tools when the pressure is applied. After die forming at least one of the apertures is burnished by forcing a ball (81, fig. 13) through said aperture. The components may be used to make a gearbox casing. A similar method can also be employed when joining components which have not been cast.
