Abstract
A method of marine anti-fouling comprises using a light source 2 and 3 at certain wavelengths to attract fish which feed on the microorganisms which cause marine fouling. When used on a vessel hull 6 this method eliminates the need to remove the vessel from the water or apply environmentally harmful coatings to the hull. The light source may illuminate the exterior of the hull Fig 1, the light source may be provided inside a semi-transparent boat hull Fig 2 or the boat hull may be provided with a luminous coating Fig 2 to attract the fish.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Marine anti-fouling system This marine anti-fouling system uses light at preferred wavelengths to attract fish to microorganisms which foul boats and marine equipment. By attracting the fish to these organisms, the fish feed on them keeping the boat (or equipment) free of fouling and negating the necessity to remove it from the water.
Fouling is a chronic problem for all watercraft and related equipment such as bouys. Current anti-fouling is predominantly toxic or poisonous and requires periodic re-application, necessitating the removal of boats from water. This is expensive and ecologically bad for the marine environment, especially harbours and marinas. Because of their toxicity, the application of current anti-fouling methods can also be hazardous to health.
