Abstract

A grab handle 10 is manufactured from gas assisted injection moulded plastic replacing conventional metal tubular type. The process produces hollow sections of any desired shape with integral mounting brackets 12. The handle needs no painting, Is corrosion free and can have a grained finished surface 14. Rigid foam may be added for additional stiffness.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO GRAB HANDLES Grab handles are mainly used for assisting people entering or steadying people using motor vehicles.
In certain cases the grab handles have to withstand a lot of stress, in particular, when drivers enter very high commercial vehicle cabs.
The design of these grab handles tend to be manufactured in tube made from metal, such as, steel with attached mounting brackets to fasten to bodywork.
According to the present invention there is provided a grab handle manufactured from gas assisted injection moulded plastic. This process tends to push the plastic to the walls of the moulding tool producing a hollow section throughout the moulding and an additional stiffness can be obtained by adding glass strands via injection.
This process enables the sectional shapes to be aesthetically pleasing to suit individual requirements and any mounting brackets normally screwed or welded to the tube can now to be an integral part of the moulding.
The process and material allows the design to be warm to the touch.
No surface finish such as painting is required and is corrosion free and puts the strength where it is required. The hollow section may also be filled with rigid foam for additional strength.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by the way of an example; Figure. 1. shows a typical design of a grab handle in perspective.
Figure. 2. shows an enlarged view of a typical hollow section of a mounting point.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure. 3. shows a grab handle in perspective with a part section showing rigid foam added.
Referring to the drawing Fig 1 the grab handle 10 is formed with a rectangular section having built in finger grips 11 to prevent hands slipping. It also incorporates integral mounting brackets 12. The mounting holes 13 when moulded in are self bushed due to the process. The grab handle also has a grained finish 14 again to prevent hands from slipping. It also tends to improve the appearance of the handle.
A sectional view of the grab handle 10 is illustrated in Fig 2 showing the bolt head 15 sunk into a recess below the top face of the mounting fixing.
In order to provide additional stiffness the grab handle 10 may be injected with rigid foam 16.
