Abstract
An air filter assembly comprises an air filter housing (1) constructed from a non-combustible material and a paper air filter element (2) located within the housing. The housing has an air inlet (3) and an air outlet (4) and an automatic closing device provided, in the inlet and in the outlet. Preferably each device comprises a spring loaded 'butterfly' or flap (5), opposingly held in a normally open position, against spring (6) tension provided by a taut length of material (7), which will melt and break when heated such as in the event of a fire within the housing. The material may be a thin nylon line, routed in such a way within the filter housing so as to expose it to the heat from any fire whilst not interfering with conventional replacement of the air filter element. If a fire occurs within the housing, the butterflies or flaps simultaneously and quickly rotate to a closed position to contain the fire within the housing. To improve the air seal between the peripheral edge of the butterfly and the housing, a rebate (8) is provided around the inner circumference of the housing.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
AUTOMATIC FIRE RETARDING AIR FILTER ASSEMBLY This invention relates to an automatic fire detection & suppression system for use in conjunction with a non-combustible, fire-retarding air filter housing.
It is stated/77 that potentially, one third of all vehicle fires occurring on motorways are caused by the incandescent embers from cigarette butt ends discarded from open windows by the driver or passenger (s) of preceding vehicles being drawn into the air filter housing of vehicles that are following behind.
The incandescent embers of tobacco subsequently ignite the paper air filter element, causing the air filter housing to catch fire, with the risk of burning debris being drawn into the engine, and subsequent fire spread from the housing to involve the remainder of the vehicle.
According to the present invention, any such fires occurring within the housing will be automatically detected, and contained through the simultaneous closure of both the inlet and outlet apertures. The fire will then be either significantly suppressed or totally extinguished due to oxygen starvation, reducing the risk of fire spread and reducing the possibility of internal engine damage.
It is accepted that the physical shape of an air filter housing will vary from vehicle to vehicle, according to individual physical constraints. Similarly, it is accepted that the location of the air inlet aperture in relation to the housing and to the air outlet aperture will also vary. The operation of this invention is intended to accommodate such variations.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying Drawing 1/1 :- The air filter housing (1) should be constructed from a non-combustible material that is assembled in such a way as to retain its integrity at very high temperatures. Any mountings necessary to secure the air filter housing to the vehicle should also be non-combustible. The necessity for external application of a combustible surface coating to the housing e. g a paint should be avoided. The shape of the housing does not necessarily need to be cylindrical. The conventional air filter element (2) is located within the housing and is not normally visible; hence depicted by a dotted line in Drawing 1/1.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The housing is fitted with an air inlet (3) and an air outlet (4). The relative positions of these is generally unimportant. Two automatic closing devices are provided, one in the inlet and one in the outlet. Both devices comprise spring loaded'butterflies'or flaps (5), opposingly held in the normally open position, against spring (6) tension by a taut length of material (7), which will melt and break when heated in the event of a fire within the housing, for example, but not exclusively, thin nylon line, routed in such a way within the filter housing so as to clearly expose it the heat from any fire whilst not interfering with conventional replacement of the air filter cartridge.
If this happens, the butterflies or flaps simultaneously and quickly rotate to the closed position, containing the fire within the housing. To improve the air seal between the peripheral edge of the butterfly and the aperture, a rebate (8) is provided around the inner circumference of the aperture, intended to utilise the additional contact area of the flat surface around the outer circumference of the butterfly or flap.
The butterflies do not need to be circular and do not need to the same shape as each other.
Claims (4)
1. A housing within which the air filter element is housed, the former being intentionally constructed from one or a combination of different, non-combustible and fire-resisting materials.
2. An air filter assembly as claimed in Claim 1, fitted with spring loaded butterflies or flaps, opposingly held in the normally open position, against spring tension by a taut length of carefully routed material, which will melt or break when heated in the event of a fire within the housing.
3. An air filter assembly as claimed in Claim 2, the spring loaded butterflies or flaps of which automatically and simultaneously close when the fire-detecting material breaks, containing the fire within the housing and either suppressing or extinguishing the fire due to oxygen starvation
4. An automatically fire retarding air filter assembly substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying Drawing 1/1.
