Abstract

A protection sheet (10) comprises two plies (11,12) of blended polyethylene including anti-slip agent. A first ply (11) defines a non-slip backing and a second ply (12) defines non-slip air pockets (14) with the first ply (11). The sheet provides slip resistance on both sides and is impervious to water and oil based liquids.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
PROTECTION SHEET The present invention relates to protection sheets and in particular to sheets used to protect floor surfaces during building, decoration, cleaning or other operations.
Existing floor protection covering materials comprise single ply sheets. A disadvantage of such materials is that they provide insufficient protection for the floor surface, particularly against impacts. Such materials also tend to be smooth, which leads to the danger of slippage and personal injury, especially where one sheet overlies another or a sheet is folded over itself. Moreover, conventional dust sheets of fabric material allow liquids to leak through.
Aspects of the present invention seek to overcome or reduce the above-mentioned problems.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a plastics sheet having air pockets and made of a material incorporating an anti-slip agent.
The material is preferably one or more low density polyethylenes (including metallocene) and the anti-slip agent is preferably a high molecular weight polyethylene.
Preferred materials comprise a blend of two low density polyethylenes or a blend of a low density polythylene and a metallocene.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of protecting a floor surface comprising covering the surface with a plastics sheet having air pockets and made of a material incorporating an anti-slip agent.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows part of a sheet of plastics material located on a floor surface.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Referring to the drawing, sheet 10 comprises two plies of blended polyethylene, viz a first ply 11 defining a non-slip backing and a second ply 12 defining non-slip air pockets 14 with the first ply 11. Both plies comprise the same blend.
A preferred blend comprises two low density polyethylenes (LDPE and LLDPE) and an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (U. H. M. W PE), with the following specifications : LDPE Density : 0. 921 g/cm3 Impact Resistance (Dart Drop Test) : 115 Coefficient of friction : > 0.5 LLDPE Density : 0. 938 g/cm3 Impact Resistance (Dart Drop Test) : 13 Coefficient of friction : > 0.5 U. H. M. W PE Density : 0. 95 g/cm3 The proportions by weight may be 0-99. 5 LDPE, 0-99. 5 LLDPE and 0. 5-10 U. H. M. W PE. Preferred proportions by weight are 70-99. 5 LDPE, 0-50 LLDPE and 0. 5-2. 5 U. H. M. W PE. One preferred blend comprises 88% LDPE, 11. 5% LLDPE and 0.5% U. H. M. W. PE.
The relatively high proportion of LDPE provides the sheet material with high impact resistance. The U. H. M. W. PE also has high impact strength, even at low temperatures, and has a high abrasion resistance. The U. H. M. W. PE also has a good resistance to wear,
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
even when in contact with water or oil based liquids, and contributes to attenuating sound and vibrations.
As shown the sheet is preferably used with the air bubbles in contact with the floor surface 20 to provide a higher resistance to slippage. The sheet may also be used instead of a conventional dust sheet to cover articles of furniture or other items.
Applications of the sheet include: (i) Domestic painting and decoration (where a light weight version can be used, preferred thicknesses being from 100 to 200 microns); (ii) Professional painting and decorating, industrial cleaning and light building maintenance (where a medium weight version can be used, preferred thicknesses being from 200 to 300 microns); and (iii) heavier work and larger areas where wheelbarrows and other heavy traffic might be expected (where a heavy weight version can be used, preferred thicknesses being from 300 to 500 microns).
The above-described sheet has various advantages. It provides slip resistance on both sides even when wet, thus leading to improved safety levels. It is impervious to water and oilbased liquids. Its cell structure leads to efficient sound and vibration deadening. The air pockets offer good protection against impacts, especially dropped tools.
The sheet may be conveniently sold and handled in 25 metre rolls of 2 metre width. The edges of adjacent sheets can be attached to each other by lengths of adhesive tape. This has the advantage of preventing articles or liquids passing through gaps at the regions where the sheets adjoin. The sheets are sufficiently rigid to allow and maintain attachment.
Various modifications may be made to the above-described sheet. For example a wide range of plastics materials (e. g. PVC or high-density polyethylene) and blends may be used.
The sheet may comprise three or more plies of material. Dyes or pigments may be
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
incorporated so that different weights of material representing different grades may have different colours.
One of the low density polyethylenes may be omitted and one or both may be replaced by a metallocene. A preferred alternative formulation comprises the above LDPE plus a metallocene plus the U. H. M. W. PE additive.
