Abstract

Ores &c. containing lead and silver are subjected to the action of a nitrogen-containing oxidizing agent such as saltpetre, and subsequently or simultaneously are treated with a saturated or substantially saturated solution of an alkali chloride or alkaline earth chloride, heated or not, and with or without the addition of acid. Various ores containing lead, or lead and silver, with other metals such as copper, gold, and zinc, may be roasted with saltpetre and treated with concentrated solutions of sodium or calcium chloride, whereupon chlorides of lead and silver are obtained; or a solution containing saltpetre and common salt may be used. In some cases the oxidized ore may be mixed with an inert material such as sand before lixiviation.
