Abstract

A modular gaming apparatus comprises a plurality of processing hubs 2, 4, each having respective random selection means for a different game of chance, and at least one console 14 which is re-configurable to operate an interface for any of said processing hubs 2, 4. Each processing hub 2, 4 may comprise a respective memory such as CD-ROM which stores data for downloading to said at least one console to operate as an interface for that processing hub. The console 14 may be transferred between processing hubs 2, 4 without interrupting the use of those hubs 2, 4 via other consoles. The players may sit at consoles 8 positioned around the hub 2, 4 and are able to place bets via touch screen displays on the consoles 8. The games of chance may involve a roulette type game or a horse racing game. An operator of a gaming establishment may transfer a console 14 between processing hubs 2, 4 as required to redistribute players accordingly to any increase or decrease in the relative popularities of the games provided by the hubs 2, 4.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
GAMING APPARATUS The present invention relates to a modular gaming apparatus.
It is known to provide a modular gaming apparatus comprising a processing hub having random selection means for a game of chance, and a plurality of consoles, each of which operates as an interface to the processing hub.
The processing hub of one known apparatus comprises a wheel mounted for rotation about its axis in a horizontal plane and formed with a plurality of compartments about its peripheral edge, and means for releasing one or more balls onto the surface of the rotating wheel. Players sitting at respective consoles positioned around the hub are able to place bets, via those consoles, upon the compartment or compartments into which the or each ball will fall when the wheel comes to rest.
Another example comprises means for simulating a horse race, with players able to bet, via respective consoles, upon the outcome of the race.
It is also known to increase the playing capacity of such an apparatus by connecting additional consoles to the processing hub, each console being arranged to provide an interface for a specific game. However, we have found that gaming establishments are often deterred from expanding the capacity of their existing gaming apparatus by the large financial outlay required to purchase additional consoles, in the knowledge that a particular game may quickly lose popularity amongst players as a new game is introduced.
We have now devised a more versatile and cost effective arrangement which overcomes the problems associated with existing modular gaming apparatus.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a modular gaming apparatus comprising a plurality of processing hubs, each having respective random selection means for a different game of chance, and at least one console which
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
is re-configurable to operate an interface for any of said processing hubs.
Thus, the operator of a gaming establishment, having purchased a console, may transfer that console between processing hubs as required to re-distribute players according to any increase or decrease in the relative popularities of the games provided by the hubs. Furthermore, to upgrade the apparatus to provide a new game, the operator of the gaming establishment need only purchase a new processing hub to which he may then connect one or more of his existing consoles.
Preferably each processing hub comprises a respective memory, for example a CD-ROM, which stores data for downloading to said at least one console, to configure the console to operate as an interface for that processing hub.
Preferably the apparatus is arranged such that said at least one console may be transferred between processing hubs without interrupting the use of those hubs via other consoles.
Preferably said at least one console comprises a touch sensitive display screen.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of an example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a view of a gaming apparatus in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the gaming apparatus which is shown includes a pair of processing hubs 2, 4, each having respective random selection means for a different game of chance.
In particular, one of the processing hubs 2 comprises a wheel 6 mounted for rotation about its axis in a horizontal plane and formed with a plurality of compartments about its peripheral edge, and means for releasing a ball onto the surface of the rotating wheel. Players sitting at consoles 8 positioned around the hub 2 are able to place bets, via respective touch screen displays 10, upon the compartment into which a ball released onto the surface of the rotating wheel
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
6 will fall when the wheel comes to rest.
The second processing hub 4 comprises a screen 12 on which a simulated horse race is displayed, with players able to bet, via the touch screen displays 10 of respective consoles 8, upon the outcome of the race.
An additional console 14 is provided for selectively connecting to either the first processing hub 2 or the second processing hub 4, via a cable or wireless link, when an additional player needs to be accommodated at one of those hubs.
The apparatus is arranged such that the console 14 may be connected to, or disconnected from, either of the processing hubs 2,4 without interrupting the normal game playing operations of the hub.
Each hub 2,4 is arranged to detect the console 14 being connected thereto, to transfer to the console all of the data required for the console to operate as an interface for the hub.
Whilst the processing hubs 2, 4 shown in the drawing are each provided with a plurality of permanently connected consoles 8, it would remain in accordance with the present invention for each of the consoles 8 to be re-configurable, in the same way as console 14, for use with either hub or with one or more additional hubs which may subsequently be added to the apparatus.
The apparatus thus described allows the same console to be transferred between different processing hubs, thereby increasing the versatility of the system in a cost effective manner.
