Abstract

237,586. Soc. Rateau. July 22, 1924, [Convention date]. Shafts and shafting.-To prevent vibration, the shaft of a turbine, fan, centrifugal pump, or other rotary apparatus is mounted with a flexible overhanging portion, which has a critical speed lower than the normal running speed, in such a way that it is self-centring. In the example shown the turbine a is mounted on the shaft b between the bearings c, c<1> and a fan rotor d is mounted on the flexible overhanging portion e of the shaft. To restrict the vibrations of the shaft at the critical speed, a guide socket i which allows a little play, is arranged round the free end of the shaft. After passing the critical speed the shaft centres itself and does not then touch the socket i. The socket may consist of a number of pieces under spring pressure.
