Abstract

A floor mat assembly includes a base portion 2 with a polymeric backing layer 10 and a fibre upper layer 8, and a removable insert 6 with a polymeric backing layer 13 and a fibre upper layer 12 that fits into an aperture 4 in the base portion 2. The aperture 4 may be formed by die cutting and the cut - out portion then used as the insert 6 by placing it in the aperture. Alternatively, the insert 6 may be made from a separate, cheaper material such as a polyester fabric bonded to a rubber backing. A printed image may be placed on the surface of the insert which may be held in place by connecting means 14 such as hook and loop material, a releasable adhesive or cleats. Preferably the base portion is nitrile rubber which is thicker than conventional floor mat backing and is bonded in a heat press to the fibre layer of tufted pile. Advantageously the floor mat can carry printed messages such as advertisements or company logos, is washable and may be used in establishments such as shops and factories.
