Abstract
The lifting device 10 comprises a solid elongate body which is tapered at end T1 for insertion under the bottom edge of a door D to facilitate the correct alignment of the door within the door frame during door installation. The lifting device 10 has a parallelogram shaped side-section demonstrating rotational symmetry(see Fig 3), with two tapered ends T1 and T2 enabling the device to act as a primary mechanical lever when downward pressure is applied to end T2. The device turns on its fulcrum, simultaneously lifting the door. Due to its rotational symmetry the device can be turned over and around to achieve the same effect. In order to retain stability and limit the risk of it toppling over, the device is greater in width than thickness.
Description
Lifting Device
The present invention related to a device for lifting a door when hanging a door, that is to say when mounting a door to its door frame by means of its hinges.
When hanging a door, it is necessary to lift the door off the floor through a small distance, to align its hinges with the corresponding cut-outs formed in the door frame.
Conventionally, a pair of wedges are pushed under the bottom edge of the door in order to lift it as required: the procedure is however not always easy to perform. Various lifting devices have been proposed to serve the same purpose, but this suffer from various drawbacks, particularly complex or expensive construction or complicated to use.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a lifting device for lifting a door when hanging the door, the lifting device comprising an elongate body which is tapered at one end for insertion under the bottom edge of the door and is formed, at a point between its opposite ends and for engaging the floor, to provide a fulcrum.
In use, the device acts as a lever. The tapered end of the device is inserted under the bottom edge of the door: then downward pressure is applied to the opposite end of the device to cause it to turn on its fulcrum, which engages the floor at an intermediate point between its opposite ends; this raises the tapered end of the device so lifts the door.
Preferably the width of the device, at least at the location of its fulcrum, is equal to or greater than the overall thickness of the device, so that the risk is reduced that it might topple over e. g. when downward pressure is applied to its outer end.
Preferably the device is tapered at both ends and is symmetrical so that it can be turned over and turned round for use the opposite way round if desired.
Preferably the device comprises a solid body having top and bottom surfaces and opposite, inclined end surfaces, one
forming a tapered end with the top surface and the other forming a tapered end with the bottom surface : a fulcrum is formed between the top surface and one of the end surfaces, and a corresponding fulcrum is formed between the bottom surface and the other end surface.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of a lifting device in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a plane view of the lifting device of
Figure 1, on a reduced scale;
FIGURE 3 is a side view of the lifting device, also on a reduced scale; and
FIGURE 4 is a view showing use of the lifting device when hanging a door.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, there is shown a lifting device which comprises an elongate, solid body 10 which is rectangular in plan view (Figure 2) and in the shape of a parallelogram in side view (Figure 3): thus, the body 10 has parallel top and bottom surfaces 12,14, parallel opposite side surfaces 16,18 which are perpendicular to the top and bottom surfaces, and opposite end faces 20,22 which are parallel to each other but inclined to the top and bottom surfaces. The device accordingly has opposite, tapered ends Tl, T2 : one tapered end Tl is at the end of the bottom surface of the body 10 and the other tapered end T2 is at the end of the top surface of the device.
In use for lifting a door D when hanging the door via its hinges to a door frame (Figure 4), the device is placed on the floor adjacent the bottom edge of the door, with one of its
tapered ends T, directed towards the door. Then the device is pushed forwardly so that its tapered end Tl is inserted under the bottom edge of the door. The user then applies downward pressure on the tapered opposite end T2 of the device, using
his foot : the device acts as a lever, pivoting about the junction between the bottom surface 14 and inclined end surface 20 at that end of the device, so raising the other end of the device and thereby lifting the door D.
By varying the degree of downward pressure on the outer end of the device, the door can be lifted an appropriate amount to align its hinges with the respective cut-outs on the door frame. The hinges are then screwed to the frame in the usual manner, and the lifting device is removed.
It will be noted that the body 10 is symmetrical such that it may be turned over and round and used with either end inserted under the door. The width of the body 10 is equal to or greater than its thickness, to reduce the risk that it might topple over in use.
It will be appreciated that the lifting device which has been described is of simple, inexpensive and robust construction, yet is easy and effective to use.
