Abstract

A described grass growing cover comprises a metal channel frame 1, fluorescent light fittings 2, a heating and ventilation unit 3 and a waterproof cover 4. The heating and ventilation unit comprises a fan and a thermostatically controlled heater. The cover 4 is insulated to assist in temperature regulation. The light fittings can be suspended at different heights above the grass (claim 1). In operation the fan is always on to assist in carbon dioxide assimilation, whereas the heater is on intermittently as controlled by the thermostat.

Description

GRASS GROWING COVER This invention relates to a free-standing unit which will enhance the growing of grass.
The portable unit will be used to cover an area of grass that requires repair following damage or where new turf has been laid which requires to be bedded in.
The cover would assist the groundsmen at football ! rugby stadiums who encounter problems with the playing surfaces following bad weather.
The cover will promote growth within the grasses rooting system to help the turf attach to the ground.
The unit will consist of the following.
FRAME (drawing reference 1) The frame will be made of metal bolted channel. The size of the frame is totally flexible and will depend on the area to be repaired. See growlights.
GROWLIGHTS (drawing reference 2) 1500mm twin fluorescent 240 volt AC light fittings housing daylight tubes, will be suspended from the framework. The height of the light fittings will be adjustable to enable fast and slow growth as required. The closer the fitting is to the grass the faster the grass will grow.
Each twin fluorescent fitting will cover an area of 3 metres by 1.5 metres.
Therefore the frame size will increase proportionally to the number of light fittings required to cover the area under repair.
HEATING AND VENTILATION (drawing reference 3) An appropriately sized fan and heater will be fitted to each unit to maintain the temperature inside the unit at the optimum growing temperature. The size and power of the fan and heater will change with the area to be covered.
WATERPROOF COVER (drawing reference 4. Cover shown cut away for detail) A waterproof cover will be attached to the unit to restrict the amount of rain landing on the grass under repair. The cover will also have some insulating properties to assist in keeping the area under cover at the determined temperature.
TEMPERATURE CONTROL (drawing reference 5) A thermostat mounted in the middle of the area under repair will stop and start the unit heater when required. The fan will remain running to assist in the drying of the area under repair and to assist in carbon dioxide assimilation.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A grass growing cover that uses electric light suspended from variable heights to encourage grass growth.
  2. 2. A grass growing cover as claimed in Claim 1 that uses a metal bolted channel frame to cover the area under repair.
  3. 3. A grass growing cover as claimed in Claim 1 and 2 that uses a fan, heater and thermostat to maintain the area under repair at the required temperature to stimulate growth and carbon dioxide assimilation.
  4. 4. A grass growing cover as claimed in Claim 1,2 and 3 that uses a waterproof cover with some insulating properties to restrict the amount of rainfall and assist in keeping heat within the area under repair.
