Description
EXERCISE AND REHABILITATION EQUIPMENT
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to exercise and rehabilitation equipment.
In British Patent Specification No. 2 347 656 (to which reference should be made) there is described an adaptation for a cycle comprising a primary crank arranged for rotation about a first axis, a secondary crank, connection means for selective connection of the secondary crank to the primary crank at a selected one of a plurality of plurality of positions on both the primary crank and the secondary crank, a pedal mounted on the secondary crank, and selectively operable means for either permitting or preventing rotation of the secondary crank relative to the primary crank.
The adaptation described in said specification can be fitted to an exercise cycle in place of an existing crank by removal of the existing crank and fitment of the adaptation to the exercise cycle in place of the crank which has been removed.
This arrangement is practical only for those exercise cycles which have two separately formed cranks which are attached releasably to the two ends of an axle mounted in bearings carried by the frame of the exercise cycle. It is not practical for those exercise cycles which have a one-piece crank, i. e. a unitary element, typically a forging, which has a pedal at each end and has its centre portion mounted in bearings carried by the frame of the exercise cycle.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide an adaptation for fitment to an exercise cycle to enable it to be used for rehabilitation exercises.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a method of modifying a standard exercise cycle to make it suitable for use by people with lower limb disabilities as a form of exercise or rehabilitation.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an adaptation for fitment to a crank of an exercise cycle, said adaptation comprising a front plate and a back plate having means whereby they can be attached to the crank with the front plate in front of the crank and the back plate behind the crank, and the front plate being formed with a series of spaced holes so that either a pedal or an arm on which a pedal is carried can be attached to the front plate.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of modifying a standard exercise cycle to make it suitable for rehabilitation exercises, said method comprising removing the pedals from the exercise cycle and fitting an adaptation as defined above to each of the cranks instead of the pedals.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided an exercise cycle having a one-piece crank and an adaptation as defined above fitted to each end of the crank.
The front plate and the back plate are preferably secured together in parallel spaced relationship and the back plate is preferably formed with an aperture which is aligned with the aperture originally formed in the crank to receive a stub shaft carried by a pedal. The back plate is then preferably secured to the crank by means of a location bolt which passes through the aperture in the back plate and fits in the aperture in the crank.
The front plate and the back plate may be bolted or welded together and the arrangement is preferably such that the plane of the presented face of the front plate can be fixed in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of the crank by means of grub screws which enter tapped apertures in the back plate and bear against the adjacent face of the crank.
The holes in the front plate are preferably equally spaced and arranged in a line located centrally of the front plate. Numerals may be provided adjacent the holes to facilitate identification thereof.
The holes in the front plate are arranged to receive either a pedal or an arm on which a pedal is mounted, with the arm then being arranged for rotation about the axis of the associated hole or fixed against rotation relative to the front plate.
A graded series of exercises may thus be provided and the physiotherapist or other person supervising use of the apparatus will fit the pedals (or arms carrying pedals) in the appropriate positions, which may be either the same on both sides or different on the two sides, depending on the nature of the limb disabilities or other requirements of the user of the apparatus.
The user will be notified of the settings so that, when discharged from hospital or when carrying out unsupervised exercises, the user can ensure that the appropriate settings are used.
The range of settings and exercises may be as described in
British Patent Specification No. 2 347 656, to which reference should be made.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a front view of an adaptation in accordance with the present invention fitted to a one-piece crank of an exercise cycle, and
Figure 2 is a part-sectional side view of the adaptation and crank.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The drawings show a one-piece crank 10 as commonly used on exercise cycles and which is rotatably mounted on the support structure (not shown) of the exercise cycle for rotation about a horizontal axis 11. The end portions 12 and 13 of the crank 10 are disposed one on each side of the support structure and extend at right angles to the horizontal axis 11.
Each crank end portion 12,13 is formed with an aperture adjacent the free end thereof and, for exercise bicycles in accordance with current manufacturing procedures, such apertures each receive a stub shaft carried by a pedal (not shown). The pedals are freely rotatable about the axes of the respective apertures (which are equally spaced from the crank axis 11) and such an arrangement is ideally suited for a person wishing to use the exercise cycle purely for exercise purposes. The arrangement is, however, not suitable for use by a person with a lower limb disability wishing to carry out rehabilitation exercises. The pedals and stub shafts are accordingly disconnected from the crank end portions 12,13 and replaced by adaptations in accordance with the present invention.
As shown in the drawings, each adaptation includes a front plate 14 (hereinafter referred to as a pedal arm) and a back plate 15 intended to be secured to the respective crank end portions 12, 13. Each pedal arm 14 is formed with a row of ten equally spaced holes 16 which are arranged centrally of the pedal arm 14 and extend in a row at right angles to the axis 11. Each pedal arm 14 is secured to the associated back plate 15 either by means of threaded fasteners (not shown) or by welding. Each adaptation is slid into position on the associated crank end portion 12,13 and fixed thereto, as described below.
After fitting of an adaptation on the associated crank end portion 12,13, a technician or the like will ensure that each assembly comprising a pedal arm 14 and a back plate 15 is centralised and locked in position relative to the associated crank end portion 12,13 by means of grub screws 17. Each pedal arm 14 is accurately positioned parallel to the associated crank end portion 12,13 by appropriately tightening further grub screws 18.
Each of the back plates 15 is formed with an aperture 19 which is aligned with the aperture formed in the associated crank end portion 12,13 and each back plate 15 is attached to its associated crank end portion by means of a locating bolt 20. The end hole 16 of the row of holes in each pedal arm 14 is aligned with the aperture 19 in the associated back plate 15 and with the aperture in the associated crank end portion 12,13 and the length of each of the location bolts 20 is such as to permit the fitment of a pedal stub shaft or a pivot mounting for an arm on which a pedal is mounted in such end hole, if so required.
Numerals (not shown) are provided adjacent the holes 16 in the pedal arm 14 to facilitate identification of the holes and, as mentioned above, each of the holes 16 can act as a mounting for either a pedal or an arm on which a pedal is mounted. If an arm carrying a pedal is used, the arm may be arranged for rotation about the axis of the associated hole 16 in the pedal arm 14 or may be fixed against rotation relative to the pedal arm 14, depending on the physical condition of the user and the exercises which are to be carried out.
A graded series of exercises will normally be provided for the user of the exercise cycle and the physiotherapist or other person supervising the carrying out of the exercises will fit the pedals (or the arms carrying the pedals) in the appropriate holes 16 in the pedal arm 14. The numbers of the holes 16 on the two sides of the exercise cycles may be either the same or different, depending on the limb disabilities or other requirements of the user of the exercise cycle.
The user will normally be notified of the settings, i. e. the numbers of the holes 16 in which the pedals or arms are fitted, so that, when discharged from hospital or when carrying out unsupervised exercises, the user can ensure that the appropriate settings are used. The range of settings and exercises may be as described in British Patent Specification No. 2 347 656, to which reference should be made.
A physiotherapist is thus able to obtain a relatively inexpensive exercise cycle having a one-piece crank and then fit an adaptation to each of the crank end portions to enable the cycle to be used for a wide range of rehabilitation exercises.
