Teaching arithmetic and reading; word, number, and design building cards and strips.-An educational appliance consists of a set of cards 10, Figs. 1 and 2. provided with slits 13 to receive detachable slips 11. 12, of length equal to the width of the cards, the cards and slips being provided with complementary pictorial representations or other matter which produce the complete representation when the slip is in position and does not project beyond the edges of the card. Figs. 1 and 2 show cards and slips bearing complementary portions of pictures of objects together with their names, the latter being arranged to indicate the phonetic or sound values of the different letters or syllables. Both sides of the cards and slips may be provided with such matter. Figs. 5 and 7 show the front and reverse sides of a card with strips d, e adapted for the teaching of arithmetic, the sum of the numbers printed on the face of the card being indicated on the portions of the strips between the slits b, c. The reverse side of the card and slips is arranged to show examples of subtraction. The slips are detached from the cards and mixed indiscriminately before being issued for use.
