Abstract

A device to establish the correct position of a picture hook comprises a pair of rollers (Figure 6) hooked onto the picture wire and attached by cords of equal length to the top corners of the frame. With the device locked into position, the frame is offered to the wall and a spike associated wit the rollers marks the wall in the correct place. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 8), a template comprises lugs R, S mounted on adjustable arms of equal length such that the lugs can be positioned on the top corners of the frame. A further lug T hooked onto the picture wire is vertically adjusted until the wire is taut and locked into position. The device is then offered to the wall and a mark is made trough a hole in lug T.

Description

A METHOD TO HANG OBJECTS TO SURFACES ENSURING CORRECT POSITIONING. This invention relates to methodologies for hanging objects to walls (or other angled surfaces) ensuring that they are correctly positioned.
Picture, mirrors and other similar object are frequently suspended by a hook (or similar) by means of a wire (or similar) attached to the back of the object. This is shown in Figure La & l. b. As can be seen from Figures 1. a. & 1. b. , the normal method to hang a picture-frame (or similar) is to attach wire (or similar) from 2 points on the back (A & B). A hook is then affixed on the wall (or similar angled surface) at point corresponding to C. Once the picture-frame wire is attached over the hook at C, the wire A) C) B becomes taut and the picture frame is suspended on the wall.
The correct location on the wall of the position that corresponds to point C though is prone to problems. When the person affixing the picture-frame to the wall presents it to the wall in question, neither the string is in tension, nor the back of the frame is easily accessible. Both of these issues can lead to both horizontal and vertical misalignment in the transposition of point C onto the wall in question. This may lead to a visually unpleasant final position of the picture-frame. Various case of misalignment are shown in Figure 2/3 and 4. Multiple picture-frames with varying wire length and/or fixing location.
The methodologies described in this patent pertain to the location of the wall hook position (C in Figure 1. ) with respect to the back of the picture-frame, and the transferral of this location onto the wall with minimal vertical or horizontal misalignments.
To transfer the desired position of the hook on to the wall, the following problems are required to be resolved.
1. Ensuring that the wire is distributed evenly. i. e. distance D-C must equal distance E-+C from Figures La. & l. b.
2. That the wire (or similar) must be taut prior to calculation of the hook location.
3. Marking of the wall, so that the hook can be affixed.
In the following description, the terms picture-frame is indicative of any object to be
hung, and wall is the representative noun for any surface on which an object is to be in. 2 affixed.
Two methodologies are now described which solve this problem. Method 1: Device attached to the back of the picture-frame.
1. Ensurine both horizontal and vertical alienment : To ensure that the distances D-C and E-+C from Figure La. & l. b. are equal, the device shown in Figure 5 is proposed.
This comprises of two rollers, W & X. Two pieces of cord are fed through the rollers, as indicated by Y & Z. On the Y end of each cord, a hook is attached which fits over the edge of the picture-frame. Attached to the roller casement is a hook that is attached to the picture-frame wire. Enough slack cord is fed through the rollers so that the hooks on the end of the cord, can be attached to the edge of the picture frame.
Once attached, the slack cord is pulled back through the rollers, until taut. The cords are then locked in place. As the cords are both the same length (ensured by the rollers), and are taut, the device is now positioned in the correct vertical and horizontal position for the wall hook. This can be seen in Figure 6.
2. Marking the wall : It is envisaged that a device similar to that used for piercing eggs will suffice to marking the wall with the desired location. As the device fits behind the picture-frame, it must be compact. This component is shown below in cross sections Figure 7.
The device, now tensioned and attached to the picture-frame is presented to the wall, and a mark is made, where the hook should be attached.
Method 2: Independent device of the picture-frame.
In this second method, instead of a device being attached to the picture-frame, and then the combined picture-frame & device being presented to the wall, just the device is presented to the wall to mark the fixing location.
The device is placed on the back of the picture-frame. The lugs R & S are adjusted to the width of the picture-frame, and rested on the top of the picture-frame. The lug T (which can be vertically adjusted and locked) has both a spike and a hole in it The spike is attached to the picture-frame wire, and vertically adjusted until the wire is taut. T is then located in position.. The template is then removed from the picture-frame and then presented to the wall. Once in position, a mark is made through the hole in T onto the wall. Figure 8. shows the proposed device. Template for locating fixing position. To cope with oval/round picture-frame, the lugs have a component perpendicular to the paper which rest on the rim of the frame Figure 9. shows the device for ensuring that the lugs at R & S are equi-distance from the centre of the device.

Claims (2)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A device comprising.
. A device to tension the picture-frame wire, and hence reduce the vertical mis alignment.
A device to locate the centre of the picture-frame, and hence reduce the horizontal misalignment.
. A device to mark the wall.
  2. 2. A method of transferring the desired position of a hook on to a wall (or other surface) for hanging a picture-frame (or similar).
