Morse and like code signalling transmitting arrangements employing a hand-operated generator, e.g. as described in Specification 175,720. The operation of the generator effects the opening and closing of the circuits at a pair of butt contacts in accordance with the signals to be transmitted. The shaft y, Fig. 1, of the generator a is driven from the handle B through the spur gearing shown, and a drum f, having its periphery shaped to represent the signals, is driven either through a worm wheel g and a worm e on the shaft of the pinion d or through a scroll drive. The movable butt contact n, co-operating with the fixed contact k, is carried by an arm l which is pivoted at m and is held by a spring p so that a pawl o on the arm bears against the periphery of the drum. Alternatively the signal representations may be arranged on the inside or at the edge of the drum, or the drum may be replaced by a movable band carrying corresponding projections, or the drum or the band may be provided with perforations corresponding to the signals and co-operating with a pivoted lever. To enable any desired message to be set up on a drum, the periphery may be provided as shown in Fig. 8 with a series of holes adapted to receive, removable pins 4. These pins co-operate with a pin or roller 6 on a lever 5 carrying the contact n, and the contacts n, k may be normally held together or held apart by a spring acting on the lever. Wireless signaJs may be transmitted on the spark system by arranging an induction coil, connected to the aerial through an oscillating circuit, in the circuit from the generator a through the contacts n, k and through the ordinary make-and-break of the coil. For continuous wave transmission the arrangement shown in Fig. 10 is used. The shaft y of the generator may carry, as shown in Fig. 7, a notched disc x co-operating with a pawl on a spring-controlled pivoted arm x to produce a high-speed make-and-break at contacts 1, 2, and this make-and-break replaces that of the induction coil for spark transmission, or is arranged in series with that at n, k, Fig. 10, for continuous wave transmission. A series of drums, each corresponding to a different series of signals may be provided with means for placing any particular -drum in operative position and for indicating which of the drums is so placed: The drums are adapted to be slid parallel to the shaft driving them to bring the desired drum into position to co-operate with the contact-carrying arm. The projections representing the signals are preferably on the inside of each drum, and a non- rotatable ring carrying indicating means is mounted in a groove on the outside of the drum, and is brought by the sliding movement into register with a window in the casing of the apparatus.
