Shaft furnaces.- In a gas-fired shaft furnace for burning lime, cement, dolomite, &c., having an enlarged cooling chamber 2 beneath the shaft 1, part of the air admitted at the base of the cooling chamber is led for primary combustion to the burner nozzles 11 through side chambers 8 formed by downward extensions 7 of the wall of the shaft. The remainder of the air passes straight up the shaft for secondary combustion. The nozzles may be arranged in rows at two or more levels, and the upper parts of the chambers 8 may be partitioned vertically, each compartment being fitted with a. damper 14 and leading to one of the nozzles. The extensions or partitions 7 may be supported on hollow water-cooled beams 17 or on refractory supports 18 traversed by cooling tubes 18<1>. The nozzles 11 are of refractory material, and are detachably connected through elbows 11<1> with the gas main.
