Abstract
A mechanism for opening an up and over door (1) has a compression spring (7) which can be enclosed in a housing and which is connected by a connecting means (4) to the door so that, when the door is closed, the spring exerts a force on the door in an opening direction. The door may be mounted in frame and the connecting means, preferably an arm, and the spring may be mounted on a plate attached to the frame. The door may be a garage door.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Door Mechanism The present invention relates to a mechanism for opening and closing doors, more particularly it relates to a mechanism which incorporates a spring for opening and closing up and over or canopy doors.
Up and over doors are widely used for garages because they provide a wide opening and, when the door is open, it is horizontal to the ground and part of the door can project out in front of the garage. To assist with the opening of the door, various types of tension springs combined with rollers in side channels in the doorframe are used to facilitate opening and closing of the door.
This basic mechanism has been very widely and successfully used, as it is robust and cheap to make and install. However the use of helical tension springs means that, when the spring is in the extended position, there are gaps between the turns of the spring in which fingers etc, could get caught and tension springs fail and need replacing at regular intervals. In addition, if a spring were to fail or break there is a potential for considerable damage to be done by the sudden release of energy and whipping about of the broken spring and the sudden closing of the door which could crush a part of a person, child or pet etc. who got in the way of the closing door. In order to overcome this problem duplicate springs can be used and in some jurisdictions this is now compulsory for all new doors. However the use of duplicate springs increases the cost and complexity of the mechanism.
We have now devised an improved up and over door opening mechanism.
According to the invention there is provided an opening mechanism for an up and over door in which there is a compression spring and a connection means connecting the spring to the door so that when the door is in the closed position the compression spring will exert a force on the door in the opening direction of the door
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
The invention also provides an opening mechanism for an up and over door which is mounted in a frame in which there is, on each side of the door, an arm one end of which is pivotally attached to the door and which is pivotally attached to the frame, the upper end of the door running in rollers in channels at the top of the frame and in which mechanism there is a spring, the first end of which is attached to a point on or adjacent to the frame and the second end of which is connected to the arm remote from the end of the arm attached to the door, which spring is under compression when the door is in the closed position.
In one embodiment of the invention the first end of the spring is attached to the end of the arm remote from the door beyond the pivot point of the arm and the second end of the spring connected to the frame or garage wall above the point where the arm is attached to the frame.
In this embodiment, when the door is closed the spring is compressed and will press down on the end of the arm and so provide an upward force on the door so that, when the door is lifted the spring assists in this lifting movement, The compression spring can be of the type in which pressure is applied to one end of the spring by the arm acting directly on the end of the spring or by there being a piston below the spring, with a rod extending through the spring, so that a pull on the rod will cause the piston to move upwards and so compress the spring. In the latter type of arrangement the compression spring can readily replace existing tension springs.
The invention further provides a lifting mechanism for an up and over door which is mounted in a frame in which there is, on each side of the door, an arm one end of which is pivotally attached to the door and the other end of which is pivotally attached to the frame, the upper end of the door running in rollers in channels at the

top of the frame and in which mechanism there is a spring the first end of which is pivotally attached to a point on or adjacent the frame and the second end of which is pivotally connected to the door, which spring is under compression when the door is in the closed position.
In another embodiment of this aspect of the invention the first end of the spring is attached to the frame or wall adjacent the frame spaced apart from the point where the arm is attached to the frame and the second end of the spring is attached to the door adjacent and spaced apart from the point where the end of the arm is attached to the door.
The end of the spring and arm are preferably mounted on a plate which is attached to the frame.
Preferably the spring is enclosed in a housing so that the spring is covered and there is no external access to the spring.
The spring can be any conventional compression spring such as an helical spring or rubber etc. which exerts an outward force when compressed.
In order to adjust the compression in the spring there is preferably an adjuster operated from outside the housing, for example the adjuster can comprise a bush mounted on a screw threaded rod, which rod passes through the spring with the bush attached to the rod below the end of the spring, so that turning the rod will cause the bush to move up or down the rod and increase or decrease the compression in the spring.
It is a feature of the invention that, when the spring is mounted in a housing it is not accessible to fingers etc. and, a compression spring cannot fail in the way a tension spring can fail as it could only collapse and stay enclosed in the housing and the door

would not suddenly close. Thus the mechanism of the invention is an improvement in safety of door opening mechanisms compared with the use of the known tension springs.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. I shows a side view of one embodiment of the mechanism Fig. 2 shows a side view of second embodiment of the invention and Fig. 3 shows an enlarged view of the spring used in Fig. 2 Referring to fig. I a garage door (1), which is partly open, has one end (2) which is mounted on rollers in channel (3). There is an arm (4) pivotally mounted at (5) pivotally connected to the door (1) at (6). There is a compression spring (7) pivotally connected to the arm (4) at (8).
When the door is closed, as shown in (I a), the spring (7) is compressed and exerts a downwards force on the arm (4) at the position (8) which generates an upwards force on the door at (6) so that, when the door is to be opened, the door is lifted and the spring will help the door to be raised.
When the door is in the open position, as shown in (I b), the spring is fully extended and the action of the spring is keep the door open.
If a spring arrangement is used, as is shown in fig. 3, in which there is a piston below the spring and movement of the piston compresses the spring, the spring can be positioned below the arm (4).
Referring to fig. 2 the door (10) in the half open position has a compression spring (11) with one end pivotally connected to the door at (12) and the other end pivotally connected to the frame at (16) and an arm (14) with one end connected to the door at
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
(15), the other end connected to the frame at (17). The connections are shown in detail in fig. 3.
In the closed position (I Ob) the spring (11) is compressed and generates an upwards force on the door at (12a). When the door is raised the effect of the spring is to assist in the raising of the door. When the door is open in position (I b) the spring and arm are in the position as shown and the spring will help keep the door open.
Referring to fig. 3 the plate (20) is fixed to the door (10) in the open position and the spring (11) is connected to plate (20) at pivot point (16) and the arm (14) is connected to plate (20) at pivot point (17). There is a plate (2 1 ) attached to the frame and the spring (11) is attached to plate (2 1) at pivot point (12) as shown and the arm (14) is attached to plate (2 1) at pivot point (15).
The spring structure comprises a casing (25) in which the compression spring (11) fits, there a rod (24) passing down through the spring which is threaded at its lower end and bush (22) is screwed onto the threaded section of the rod (24). There is a nut (23) fixed to the rod as shown so that turning the nut (22) turns the rod (24).
In order to adjust the compression in the spring (11) the nut (23) can be turned, which will cause the bush (22) to travel up or down rod (24) and so adjust the compression of the spring. In use, as the door is closing the rod (24) moves so the bush (22) moves up the casing (25) to compress the spring (24) i.e. the section (26) of the rod (24), which protrudes out of the casing, extends. When the door is closed the spring (24) is compressed. When the door is to be opened, the door is lifted and the effect of the spring is to assist in this action.
