Abstract

The system provides a method of relaying signals directly into the train driver's cab (Figure 1). A small battery-powered display unit (1) with red, double amber, amber and green lights, is fitted inside the driver's cab front window. The lights give early notification of the signal being approached. If the display light is red, an audible warning sounds. This can be switched off by the driver after the train has halted safely at the red signal. The display lights cancel after passing the transmitter ready for the next signal. An infra-red transmitter (2) is positioned in the track at a safe braking distance before the signals. Powered from the trackside power supply (3) the transmitter has electrical connection to each signal lamp (4), which encodes the transmitter with the signal information to be fired at the display in the approaching train.

Description

2363235 J.A. SCOTT'S TRAIN DRIVER'S SAFETY SIGNAL DISPLAY Reasons for the
Invention I have been very concerned for some time about the incidents of trains passing signals at red and the resulting loss of life.
It is not the fault of the train drivers that they are going through red lights. More trains, travelling faster, are using the same tracks and have to be packed together by the signal controllers, who are looking at all the trains as they progress through their track sections of the network. Even when the change of signal is correctly given, the signals themselves can be obstructed by bridges and bends in the track, giving drivers a short time in which to react. New drivers on unfamiliar routes do noi always know when and where to look out for signals.
Signal lights have to compete with low sun dazzle in winter, as well as sudden changes in weather conditions. All this causes unnecessary stress and driver fatigue, My invention will allow the drivers to see the signals cleady at all times. In addition, should the driver be looking at other equipment in his cab, an audible signal Will alert him to the fact that he is approaching a signal at red. This can be cancelled after the brakes have been applied.
The Invention The equipment comprises two units - a transmitter and a receiver/display unit.
The Transmitter The transmitter is contained in a waterproof enclosure and is fitted between the train tracks. The unit would be wired back to the track-side signal and positioned at a distance before the signal, calculated to give the required reaction and braking time for the driver to stop safely when the signal is at red. The voltage from each of the four signals - Red, Double Amber, Amber and Green - would programme the transmitter to emit an infra-red signal to the approaching train. The technology is similar to that used in a television remote control.
The Receiver/DisplaWnit A small, battery-powered unit, which can either be fitted by the driver to his front window with rubber suckers, or a permanent unit fitted on the inside of the window. The infra-red control beam, encoded for each of the four signals, is fired at the signal display on the window in front of the driver, so that he ran correctly see the signal he is approaching.
The red, double amber, amber and green lights on the display are shown for a limited time and are always cancelled when approaching the ne)d set of signals, so that the next signal information can be displayed.
There is also a facility on the display unit for an audible warning to sound on approaching a red signal. Once the train has halted, the driver can cancel this by pressing a button on the display.
Reason for Choice of Technolo-Qv The infra-red technology is well tried and has proved to be reliable in domestic use for thirty years. The method of waterproofing the track-side transmitter has also been used for some thirty years in the marine environment. The production of the units is inexpensive.
