Description
2362168 TOILET APPARATUS This invention relates to toilet apparatus and,
more especially, this invention relates to toilet apparatus for use by persons wishing to pass urine.
A well known problem from persons wishing to pass urine is that they often do not urinate in the intended area. The problem is mainly one resulting from male persons urinating, although the problem may also arise from female persons urinating. More specifically, a person urinating into a toilet in the form of a toilet pan, may leave urine on the toilet seat and/or the rim of the pan and/or the floor surrounding the toilet pan. A male person urinating into a urinal may also leave urine on the outside rim of the urinal and/or the floor underneath the urinal. This applies irrespective of whether the urinal is an individual urinal or a channel urinal for simultaneous use by more than one person. Self-evidently, the present of the urine in places other than the intended place is unhygienic, unsightly and unpleasant.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided toilet apparatus comprising a toilet, an elongate tubular member which in use extends out of the toilet and in an upward direction, a mouth formation at an upper end of the tubular member, connector means 2 which is at a lower end of the tubular member and which connects the tubular member to the toilet such that urine from a person urinating into the mouth formation is able to pass down the tubular member and into the toilet for disposal, and flushing means for flushing the toilet, and the tubular member being such that it is adjustable by the person so that the mouth formation is always able to be conveniently positioned for different persons irrespective of their size.
The toilet apparatus of the present invention can be used by male and female persons. Because the tubular member is adjustable, the toilet apparatus can equally conveniently be used by different persons irrespective of their size. Thus, the toilet apparatus can be used by children and adults of different heights and weights.
Preferably, the tubular member is adjustable by being adjustable in length. Usually, the tubular member will be adjustable in length by being a telescopic tubular member. Arrangements other than telescopic arrangements for adjusting the length of the tubular member may however be employed if desired.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the tubular member may be of a fixed length but flexible so that the tubular member is able to be extended or retracted in order to achieve the convenient position. For example, the flexible member may be bent or coiled in order to provide sufficient of the tubular member that enables it to be extended and retracted over a required range of movement. Generally, the tubular member used in 3 the toilet apparatus of the present invention can be of any suitable and appropriate construction that enables it to be adjustable by the person using the toilet apparatus so that the mouth formation is always able to be conveniently positioned for different persons irrespective of their size.
Preferably, the toilet apparatus is one in which the connector means is an adjustable connector means which enables the tubular member to extend in the upward direction at a convenient angle for the person irrespective of the size of the person. Persons of different height and weight will tend to require different positions for the mouth formation and these different positions can easily be achieved with the use of the adjustable connector means.
Preferably, the adjustable connector means is a universal joint connector means having a through bore for the passage of the urine from the tubular member into the toilet.
Preferably, the mouth formation is a removable mouth formation. The mouth formation can then easily be removed for cleaning. If desired, the mouth formation can be a fixed mouth formation. The mouth formation may be of any suitable and appropriate shape, for example depending upon whether the toilet apparatus is to be used by male and/or female persons.
Advantageously, the toilet apparatus includes interface means for providing an interface between the mouth formation and the genital of the person.
4 The interface means may be a fixed interface means. Preferably however the interface means is for removal and personal use by the person. Thus each person may have their own interface means which the person may carry if desired. The interface means may be of any suitable and appropriate shape, for example depending upon whether the interface means is for male and/or female use. The interface means may be a sleeve member for use by a male person, the sleeve member being such that it fits to the mouth formation. The sleeve member may fit to the mouth formation by fitting inside the mouth formation. The outside of the sleeve member and/or the inside of the mouth formation may have sealing means for helping to prevent leaks, for example during cleaning of the tubular member. The sealing means may be in the form of flexible fins or O-ring seals.
The toilet apparatus may be one in which the flushing means for the toilet is connected to the tubular member and washes the tubular member as the toilet is flushed. Advantageously, the flushing means for the toilet also washes the genital of the person using the toilet apparatus.
Alternatively, if desired, the toilet apparatus may include auxiliary washing means for washing the tubular member. The auxiliary washing means may also wash the genital of the person using the toilet apparatus.
The toilet apparatus may include a booster pump for increasing water pressure. The booster pump can be used where there is not enough water pressure for adequately washing the tubular member and the mouth formation.
Advantageously, the toilet apparatus includes blow drying means for blow drying the mouth formation and/or the genital of the person using the toilet apparatus.
The blow drying means may be a hot air blower. The hot air blower may be similar in operation to the hot air blowers used in public conveniences for persons drying their hands after washing them after going to the toilet.
The blow drying means may be manually operated so that, for example, the blow drying means may require a person to push a button or flick a switch in order to cause operation of the blow drying means. Alternatively, the blow drying means may operate automatically when a person has finished using the toilet apparatus. Such automatically operating blow drying means could operate on detecting flushing of the toilet apparatus, or on a movement sensor detecting that a person using the toilet apparatus was moving away from the toilet apparatus after having finished urinating.
The toilet apparatus may be one in which the toilet is of any suitable and appropriate, size, shape and construction. Thus, for example, the toilet may be a toilet pan. Alternatively, the toilet may be a urinal. The urinal may be an individual urinal or a trough urinal.
The toilet apparatus of the present invention may be made of any suitable and appropriate materials. Mixtures of materials may be employed.
6 Thus, for example, the tubular member may be made of a plastics material or a metal such for example as stainless steel. The toilet may be made of a ceramic material or a metal such for example as stainless steel. The toilet apparatus can be used wherever suitable and appropriate, for example in homes, offices, factories, public conveniences, prisons, schools, public houses, clubs and buildings open to the public.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows first toilet apparatus; and Figure 2 shows part of second toilet apparatus.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown toilet apparatus 2 comprising a toilet 4 and an elongate tubular member 6 which extends out of the toilet 4 and in an upward direction. The toilet apparatus 2 also comprises a mouth formation 8 at an upper end of the tubular member 6. Connector means 10 is provided at a lower end of the tubular member 6. The connector means 10 connects the tubular member 6 to the toilet 4 such that urine from a person urinating into the mouth formation 8 is able to pass down the tubular member 6 and into the toilet 4 for disposal. The toilet apparatus 2 also comprises flushing means 12 for flushing the toilet 4.
The tubular member 6 is such that it is adjustable by the person using the toilet apparatus 2 so that the mouth formation 8 is always able to be conveniently positioned for different persons irrespective of their size. Thus 7 the mouth formation 8 can be conveniently positioned for children and adults, irrespective of the height and overall size of the children and adults.
The tubular member 6 is adjustable in length by being a telescopic tubular member 6. As shown in Figure 1, the tubular member 6 has three sections 14, 16, 18 which telescope inside each other and which enable the tubular member 6 to be increased in length to enable the mouth formation 8 to be brought to a required convenient height for a person using the toilet apparatus 2.
The connector means 10 is an adjustable connector means having a universal ball joint 20 operating in a housing 22. The universal ball joint 20 has a through bore 24 for enabling the passage of the urine from the tubular member 6 into the toilet 4.
The mouth formation 8 is removable for enabling it to be cleaned as and when appropriate. The mouth formation 8 may be fixed in position if desired.
The toilet apparatus 2 includes interface means in the form of a sleeve member 26. The sleeve member 26 provides an interface between the mouth formation 8 and the genital in the form of the penis of a male person using the toilet apparatus 2. The sleeve member 26 is removable from the mouth formation 8 so that it can be washed each time after use and stored in a bathroom, or carried by a person, for example for use in public conveniences.
The inside of the mouth formation 8 and/or the outside of the sleeve member 26 may be provided with sealing means for ensuring that urine leaks and/or flushing water leaks do not occur between the mouth formation 8 and the sleeve member 26. Any suitable and appropriate type of sealing means may be employed including flexible fins or O-ring seals on the mouth formation 8 and/or the sleeve member 26.
When the toilet apparatus 2 is not in use, a plug 28 may be employed. The plug 28 will usually fit into the mouth formation 8. If the sleeve member 26 is left in the mouth formation 8, then the plug 28 may fit into the sleeve member 26.
The flushing means 12 comprises a cistern 30 containing water 32. The cistern 30 operates in a known manner and comprises a standard ball valve 34 operating a ball cock 36 on the end of an arm 38. A screw threaded portion 40 is provided for screwing the ball cock 36 into or out of the arm 38 in order to control precisely the level of the water 32 in the cistern 30. The water 32 is provided from a mains water supply pipe 42.
The toilet 4 may be a known type of toilet pan, in which case it will be provided with a toilet seat (not shown). Flushing of the toilet 4 can then be by depressing a lever (not shown) on the cistern 30. The water 32 will then siphon through a passage 44 into the toilet 4 and thus flush the toilet 4. Residual water 46 remains in the toilet 4 as in known toilet pans.
The cistern 30 contains an overflow pipe 48 which directs any overflow water 32 into the toilet 4. In addition, the overflow pipe 48 contains 9 a pipe 50. The pipe 50 is connected to the ball valve 34 via a T-piece 51, a pipe 52 and a valve device 54. The valve device 54 is a timer valve device which has a shut off plunger for shutting off the flow of water along the pipe 50.
Water flowing along the pipe 50 passes to a booster pump 56 for increasing the pressure of the water. The booster pump 56 may be mains operated but it is preferably battery operated because of the usual requirement to reduce electrical connections in and around toilets where water is present. The booster pump may be a 12 volt booster pump which boosts the water pressure up to 20psi, or any other appropriate pressure.
A pipe 58 leaves the booster pump 56 and it extends to the mouth formation 8 as shown. The pipe 58 connects to one or more jets for jetting water at pressure into the mouth formation 8 for cleaning inside of the mouth formation 8 and the inside of the tubular member 6. If desired, the pipe 8 may provide water 4 for a manifold ring extending around the mouth formation 8, the manifold ring having a plurality of jet apertures in the form of slots 60 for jetting cleaning water into the mouth formation 8. At the time of flushing, if a person leaves his genital in the mouth formation 8, then the genital can also be washed. The flushing water from the mouth formation 8 and the tubular member 6 passes through the bore 24 and into the toilet 4 where it becomes flushed away. The urine and the water enters the toilet 4 in the form of the illustrated pan through an aperture 62 formed in the toilet 4.
Another aperture 64 is formed opposite the aperture 62. Either the aperture 62 or the aperture 64 can be utilized, depending upon whether it is preferred to mount the tubular member 6 on the right side of the toilet 4 as shown, or on the left side in which case the aperture 64 would be provided with the connector means 10. The connector means 10 easily connects to a formation 66 on the toilet 4. This formation 66 can receive the connector means 10 as a push in fit, a screw fit, or any other suitable and appropriate type of connection.
As shown in Figure 1, the unused aperture 64 is blocked with an upstanding arm 68. The arm 68 can receive toilet rolls (not shown) and/or sleeve members 26 and/or other items if desired. The arm 68 has a lower sealing portion 70 which seals the aperture 64 and prevents the loss of flushing water through the aperture 64 during flushing.
The toilet apparatus 2 also comprises blow drying means in the form of a hot air blow 72. The hot air blower 72 has a pipe 74 along which hot air is able to pass to the mouth formation 8 as shown. The hot air may then blow into the mouth formation 8, for example using the same jetting apertures used for the water from the pipe 58. Alternatively, one or more different apertures may be employed for the hot air. The mouth formation 8 and a person's penis inside the mouth formation 8 can thus be dried after washing.
For simplicity of illustration, the booster pump 56 and the hot air blower 70 have been shown positioned as though they are inside the toilet 4. Normally the booster pump 56, the hot air blower 72 and their associated pipes 58, 74 will be positioned outside the toilet 54 although they could be positioned inside if desired, in sealed compartments as appropriate. Generally the booster pump 56, the hot air blower 72 and their associated pipes 58, 74 may be positioned at any suitable and appropriate position, depending upon the construction of the toilet 4 and whether it is for domestic use or public use.
The toilet apparatus 2 as shown in Figure 1 means that a person can urinate using the tubular member 6, and the rim 76 of the toilet 4 and/or the toilet seat (not shown) will not get urine on them. Similarly, urine on the floor around the base 78 of the toilet 4 will not occur. Thus the toilet apparatus 2 is hygienic to use and it avoids the very long established problem of persons urinating on toilet seats and/or toilet rims and/or around a toilet, with the consequent lack of hygiene and associated unpleasantness of sight and smell.
Figure 2 illustrates schematically how the connector means 10 can be modified to connect to a toilet in the form of a urinal 80. The urinal 80 is shown as a channel urinal 80 but it could alternatively be an individual urinal 80. The urinal 80 is shown connected to a waste pipe 82.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, instead of the tubular member 6 being telescopic as shown, it 12 could be of a fixed length like the tube employed for conducting water to a shower head, usually above a bath. Such a tubular member is flexible and if it were stored in a housing, it could be pulled out and let fall back into the housing to achieve the required convenient height for the mouth formation 8. Generally, the tubular member 6 can be of any suitable and appropriate construction to enable it to be adjustable by the person using the toilet apparatus 2 so that the mouth formation 8 is always able to be conveniently positioned irrespective of the height and weight of the person. If desired, instead of using the water 32 from the cistern 30 to flush the mouth formation 8 and the tubular member 6, auxiliary washing means such for example as a separate mini-cistern could be employed. If desired, the blow drying facility afforded by the hot air blower 72 may be omitted. Where the hot air blower 72 is used, then it may be manually operated or it may operate automatically, for example consequent upon flushing of the toilet apparatus 2. For example, a person depressing the flushing lever (not shown) of the toilet apparatus 2 could cause the flushing lever to touch a switch which would cause operation of the hot air blower 72. Any suitable type of manual activation or automatic activation may be employed. The toilet 4 or the urinal 80 can be of any suitable and appropriate shape. Generally the toilet used in the toilet apparatus of the present invention can be any appropriate container for receiving at least urine. Instead of using a plug 28 to fit inside the mouth formation 8 in order to make the apparatus air tight when not in use, a cap fitting over the outside of the mouth formation 8 13 may be employed. The valve device 54 could be replaced by a ball valve like the ball valve 34. A trap non-return device may be employed, for example where the connector means 10 connects to the toilet 4, or at any other suitable and appropriate position.
