Abstract

An online payment method for use on the Internet by setting up a system comprising a server with database and a website associated with the server for user registration and account activation and for use as an intermediary between the user and a participating online merchant and payment transaction control. The method further comprises selling data identifying means, such as cash cards (Fig 1), associated with predetermined cash values to users, each of said cards identifying an account number and a PIN. The user is initially required to activate an account associated with the account number and PIN at the system website, with an option for changing the PIN at any later time. Upon selection of the subject payment method by the user at the website of the participating merchant, the user is directed to the system website and required to enter the account number and PIN. The method includes subsequent steps of verifying the authenticity of the account based on the entered account number and PIN with reference to the corresponding data stored in the database, checking the cash value balance of the account with reference to the corresponding data stored in the database, and if appropriate transferring funds to the participating merchant (Fig 4).

Description

2360866 ONLINE PAYMENT METHOD The present invention relates to an online
payment method for use on the Internet.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Online payment methods are generally known. The most popular payment method on the Internet is based on the use of a credit card. When a customer visiting the website of an online shop decides to buy a product and selects this payment method, he pays the shop by sending particulars of his credit card directly to the shop, based on which the shop obtains the money from the credit card company afterwards. It is well known that there are numerous fraudulent cases by reason of, for example, the shop is bogus or misappropriation of the credit card particulars that can be seen on the card itself as well as on any previous card payment vouchers.
The invention seeks to provide an online payment method that is more secure and versatile than the existing methods.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention, there is provided an online payment method for use on the Internet by setting up a system comprising a server with database and a website associated with the server for user registration and account activation and for use as an intermediary between the user and a participating online merchant and payment transaction control, which method further comprises selling data identifying means associated with predetermined cash values to users, each of said means identifying an account number and a PIN, initially requiring the user to activate an account associated with the account number and PIN at the system website, with an option for the user to change the PIN at any later time, subsequently upon selection of the subject payment method by the user at the website of a said participating merchant directing the user to the system website, requiring the user to enter the account number and PIN, verifying the authenticity of the account based on the entered account number and PIN with reference to the corresponding data stored in the database, checking the cash value balance of the account with reference to the corresponding data stored in the database, and if appropriate transferring funds to the participating merchant.
Preferably, the online payment method includes the step 25 of optionally requiring the user to register himself with certain personal data at the system website.
In a preferred embodiment, the data identifying means is in the form of a cash card bearing the account number and the PIN.
More preferably, the online payment method includes the step of temporarily covering the PIN on the cash card for security reasons, before the cash card is sold.
Conveniently, the accounts of one type are reloadable in terms of cash value, and the method includes the step of enabling the user to increase the cash value of an account of said type.
More conveniently, the online payment method includes the step of enabling the user to transfer cash value from his account to another account of said type.
It is preferred that the online payment method includes the step of associating the system with a financial establishment for opening accounts to hold and process funds corresponding to the cash values of the accounts activated.
In a preferred embodiment, the online payment method includes the step of enabling the user to create a subaccount for use by any person and to specify a rule governing the use of the sub-account.
It is preferred that all transactions made using the subaccount are debited from the account of the user creating the sub-account.
Preferably, the rule comprises presetting a maximum spending limit.
Preferably, the rule comprises restricting the nature of use and/or online shopping locations.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying 20 drawings, in which:
Figure 1 consists of front and rear views of a cash card for use in an embodiment of an online payment method in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a schematic diagram illustrating direct card activation according to the subject method; Figure 3 is a schematic diagram illustrating simultaneous card activation according to the subject method; and Figure 4 is a schematic diagram illustrating online 5 payment process according to the subject method.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated an online payment method embodying the invention, which method requires the setting up of a dedicated system formed by a server incorporating a database and an associated website having an address that may be called CashThrough. com. Multiple firewalls and security logistics are implanted into the system for protection against fraudulence and mis-use. CashThrough.com acts as' an intermediary for payment transactions between a customer and an online merchant or product/service provider.
The use of the online payment method may be based on any physical or electronic data identifying means, such as cash cards (hereinafter referred to as CashCards) sold to customers for use, regardless of the customers' age, gender and financial status, etc. Each CashCard has a certain usable cash value. Prior arrangements have been made between the system and a financial establishment such as a bank for opening bank accounts to hold and process funds corresponding to the cash values of the CashCards sold and activated.
As shown in Figure 1, each CashCard is pre-printed with an account number (or card number) and a password or personal identification number or PIN. The PIN is initially covered by a removable tape or scratch pad for security reasons, before the CashCard is sold. The user is allowed, and highly recommended, to change the PIN at any time after purchase by visiting CashThrough.com. The CashCard represents an account of its cash value and is identified by means of the account number as the card ID, and its use is protected by means of the PIN. Any transaction using the CashCard is based on verification of the PIN in association with the account number.
There are two types of CashCards that will be made available to the customers or users, namely NonReloadable CashCard and Reloadable CashCard.
Non-reloadable CashCards are provided with a certain predetermined cash value that cannot be topped up. Once the cash value is used up, the CashCard will become no longer usable. The users can enjoy most of the services as available at CashThrough.com, such as online shopping and transferring funds between CashCard accounts, etc. The only compromise of using a Non-Reloadable CashCard is that the user cannot upgrade or appreciate his CashCard. The transfer of funds from one Non- Reloadable CashCard account to another Non-Reloadable CashCard account is also limited by nature.
on the other hand, Reloadable CashCards allow the users to reload their CashCards with additional cash values as desired. There is no appreciation limit, and the users can enjoy all the services as available at CashThrough.com.
A CashCard will remain valid unless it has not been used for more than one year after card activation. Any unused cash value balance will be transferred to an idle fund account (in the bank) for recovery upon request by the registered user within seven years.
The system classifies the card users into two levels, namely Registered Users and Non-Registered Users. The major difference between these two levels does not lie in the physical form or design of the CashCards, but the depth of registration in relation to the users.
The Registered Users, as compared to Non-Registered Users, are allowed to have their CashCards and associated accounts to be used under their own names. In addition to the PIN, a Registered User's transaction will also require the card user to enter certain personal data as specified by the user during initial user registration. Examples of such personal data are his mother's maiden name, the last few digits of his official ID or passport number, his date of birth and his phone number, etc. Special arrangements can be made to increase the verification criteria for any Registered Users.
Accordingly, Registered Users' transactions are more secure against fraudulence than Non-Registered Users' transactions.
Major services available at CashThrough.com to the 10 CashCard users include Card Activation and Registration Service, Secure Online Payment Service, Card Appreciation Service, Inter-Card Transfer Service, and Card Loss and Recovery Service.
Card Activation and Registration Service Each CashCard must first be activated before use, through either direct or simultaneous activation. The card activation process includes procedures for registering the card user.
The direct card activation process is illustrated in Figure 2. In order to activate a CashCard, all the user has to do is to contact a computerbased registration center by visiting CashThrough.com and then follow the onscreen instructions. Initially, the user is required to provide certain personal information on a voluntary basis, such as his name, postal or email address or the like, for user registration (or identification). The registration data will be sent to and stored in the system server. After the user has been registered (or identified) if desired, he should enter the account number and PIN of his CashCard for card activation. If the card data match with those pre-stored in the system server, the CashCard will be validated for use, with an account of the appropriate cash value automatically created in the bank.
The simultaneous card activation process is illustrated in Figure 3. This option will be more convenient to the users, as card activation will automatically be invoked while an online purchase is being attempted using an un-activated CashCard for the first time. Apart from that, the procedures are generally the same as described above in relation to direct card activation. Subsequently, the user is allowed to continue with the online purchase.
Secure Online Payment Service The online payment process is illustrated in Figure 4. Online payment can only be performed for those online shops which participate in the subject payment scheme through prior registration or arrangement with CashThrough.com.
The online payment transaction goes through the following steps:
Step 1 A CashCard user who decides to make a purchase at the website of an online shop selects the subject payment method and enters the account number and PIN of his CashCard for sending to CashThrough.com; Step 2 The online shop also sends purchase details to CashThrough.com; Step 3 CashThrough.com initially verifies all details as matching between the user and the online shop and then seeks confirmation from the system server and the bank on the availability of the account of the user associated with the CashCard; and Step 4 Upon confirmation, the system server releases the funds, after deducting a commission charge, to the online shop, together with a transaction code.
It is important to note that during Steps 1 and 2, the sensitive information of the user, namely his CashCard account number and PIN, will never be sent to the online shop, and the user is in fact directed to CashThrough.com. On an order page of CashThrough.com prompted upon selection of this payment method, everything is hyperlinked to the system server for processing the transaction. The order page only appears to the user as part of the online shop. After the system server has completed the transaction, an order reference or transaction code will be sent to all the parties involved, namely the CashCard user, the online shop and CashThrough.com. Subsequently, the user is returned back to the online shop website.
On the order page, the purchase price can either be automatically captured upon the CashCard user selecting a specific product (or service) or be manually entered by the user. The order page may include the name of the online shop or its ID or registration number with CashThrough.com.
For a non-participating online store, the CashCard user can either contact CashThrough.com or direct the online store to CashThrough.com for registration of the store with CashThrough.com. Only until the online store has become a participating store, the subject online payment method is not available. This provides security protection to both trading parties.
Card Appreciation Service 25 This service is only available to the users of a Reloadable CashCard, which has an unlimited amount of appreciation ability.
The user may appreciate his CashCard by depositing money into or transferring money to any one of the participating banks, specifying only the account number of his CashCard. The transfer of money may also be performed directly, by means of a credit card or another CashCard or by adopting any existing payment method.
Inter-Card Transfer Service 10 This service is available to a user for transferring cash value from a CashCard of either type to a Reloadable CashCard. irrespective of whether the two CashCards belong to or activated by the same user or different users.
In the case of there being two users, the paying user initiates the transfer of cash value from his account to that of the receiving user, by visiting CashThrough.com. The system server then instantly checks the paying account balance to see whether there are sufficient funds. If so, the server will credit the receiving account with the appropriate cash value and simultaneously debits the paying account. A commission charge will be deducted from either the funds prior to transfer or made to the paying account. The transaction will be declined if the paying account balance is insufficient to cover the funds requested for transfer, -13including or plus the commission charge.
In the case of two or more CashCards being owned by the same user, the fund transferring procedures across different accounts, for the purpose of account consolidation for example, are generally the same as described above, as user identity in relation to the receiving account is of no concern.
An existing CashCard user can issue an unlimited number of CashCards to any persons that he wants, such as his children or employees, for use as SubCashCards. A Sub-CashCard is issued by the user or Master CashCard Owner by creating an artificial sub-account with corresponding account number and PIN. The Master CashCard Owner may activate, reload or ban the Sub-CashCard at any time, and is given the authority to specify a set of rules to govern its use at CashThrough.com. Examples of such rules include identifying the account from which the spent amount is to be debited, presetting a maximum spending limit and/or frequency of use before reactivation is required, restricting the nature of use and/or online shopping locations, and changing of the PIN.
As a default, any transaction made under a SubCashCard will be instantly debited from the Master CashCard account, unless otherwise specified by the Master CashCard Owner. The maximum spending limit may be set to US$100 and/or the frequency of use to five, beyond either of which the SubCashCard user is required to contact the Master CashCard Owner for reactivatIng the card. In terms of the nature of use and/or online shopping locations, the Sub-CashCard may be barred from use in relation to pornographic matters or games and/or validated for shopping only at certain specific locations, such as bookstores.
Card Loss and Recovery Service The use of a CashCard is safeguarded by the PIN. As the PIN should have been changed by the user upon card activation and therefore unknown to any third party, the cash value balance of the CashCard will be protected even if the card has been lost or stolen. In that event, the report of card loss by the user using this service is optional. The major function of this service is that, as long as the user remembers his PIN and registration details (if provided during user registration), a new CashCard will be issued, which will bear the same cash value balance but a new PIN.
The described online payment method is based on the use of physical cards, which the general public is familiar with. As the sole principal function of the cards is to identify the account number and PIN for the customers, 15- any other data identifying means may be used. In a virtual form, the image of a CashCard or the account number and PIN alone may be supplied via the Internet for display on a computer monitor. 5 The invention has been given by way of example only, and various other modifications of and/or alterations to the described embodiment may be made by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as 10 specified in the appended claims.
