Abstract

An adjustable height trailer or vehicle body comprises a chassis 1, roof frame 2, means 4 for raising and lowering the roof frame relative to the chassis and means for securing the roof frame in a chosen position. Guide means may be provided in the chassis to control the sliding movement of the roof on the chassis and the means for raising and lowering the roof may be powered.

Description

2360494 The ECOTRUCK This invention relates to an economy and
environmental aid for goods vehicles.
Vans, trucks and trailers of all shapes and sizes are 'm widespread use around the world. In order to achieve economic transportation of goods, the internal volumes of these units are usually maximised to local legislation limits. However, it is rarely the case that the cargo space is 100% utilised and therefore much power, and hence fuel, is consumed unnecessarily 'm overcoming aerodynamic drag caused by the frontal area of the trailer or body.
According to the present invention there is provided a system to reduce the frontal area of the trailer, or vehicle body, comprismig a conventional truck or trailer lower chassis, a separate roof frame, means for raising and lowering the roof frame relative to the lower chassis and for securing it in a set position. This reduced height WIN reduce drag and increase fuel economy whilst also having the positive environmental effect of decreasing hydrocarbon emissions and so reducing pollution.
A specific enibodninent of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing ffi which Figure 1 showing 3 conventional views of one type of vehicle to which this concept can be applied.
Referring to the drawing the trailer comprises a wheeled chassis 1 and a roof frame 2. At each corner there is a post and shder mechamisrn enclosing a ram 4. This ram may be hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical rack and pinion or lead screw type or, indeed, any suitable system. The rams are operated by the vehicle operator to minimise the roof height once the vehicle has been loaded. Movement of the roof frame will be up or down as indicated by the arrow 3.

Claims (1)

1 An adjustable height trailer or vehicle body comprismig a chassis, a roof frame, means for raising and lowering the roof frame relative to the chassis and means for securing the roof frame Mi a chosen position. 2 An adjustable height trailer or vehicle body as claimed in claim 1 wherein Ode means are provided on the lower chassis co-operable with the roof frame to control the sliding movement of the roof on the chassis. 3 An adjustable height trailer or vehicle body as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 whereffi means to power the roof panel movement are provided. 4 An adjustable height trailer or vehicle body as claimed in any preceeding claim whereby the internal load volume can be adjusted to match the load requirements by raising or lowering the buder or vehicle body height. 5 An adjustable height trailer or vehicle body as clanined in any preceeding claim whereby the frontal area of the trailer or vehicle is reduced by lowering the load space roof
