Winding-machines; stop-motions.-In a yarnwinding machine of the vertical spindle type a ratchet-wheel C is fixed on each sleeve A which works up and down a non-rotating building-up scre'w B, and each sleeve has mounted loosely thereon a lever D carrying the thread-guide D<1>, the said lever engaging in a vertical slot in a member E attached to a bar F which is reciprocated longitudinally to oscillate the lever D about the axis of the sleeve A, a pawl G coacting with the, ratchet-wheel C and being provided with a tail Glover which the yarn passes to hold the pawl in engagement with the wheel C. The pawl G is mounted on the inner end of a supplementary lever J pivoted at J<1> on the lever D, the lever J having a forked end which engages with a rod K which can be fixed in any position relative to the fork to vary the throw of the pawl G. Each winding-spindle L is provided with fast and loose collars L<1>, M the latter having projections M<1> which engage the pirn being wound, and a series of radial arms N. The yarn H passes through a guide R<1> on a lever R pivoted on a bracket Q, over a guide 0 at the upper end of a vertical slide P and under a fixed guide Q<1>, the slide P resting on one end of a lever S which is weighted so that normally the slide P is raised and a rod T, supported on its other end is below the path of the arms N. When the tension in the yarn becomes excessive the slide P is forced down and the rod T raised to contact with the arms N and stop the loose collar M, or, if preferred, the spindle L may be stopped. The rod T is held in its raised position by a spring latch V and must be manually released even if the yarn should break and the slide P resume its normal position.
