Abstract

Apparatus and method for measuring position and orientation of a first and second surface (1a, 2a, 1d, 2d, 1e, 2e, 57b, 59b) with respect to each other for facilitating the construction of a closing spool to be fitted between two pipe end sections. The apparatus (3a, 3d, 3e, 50b) comprises means for defining at least one common axis (6a, 6d-1, 51b) between the surfaces and means for measuring the orientation of each surface with respect to the at least one common axis. The means for defining the common axis includes at least one linear measurement device in the form of a telescopic measuring rod, a linear transducer (20a, 120a, b, c, 20d-1) and a tensionable connector (63b, 5c). A clinometer/inclinometer is used to make an angle of slope measurement. The means for measuring the orientation of each surface with respect to the common axis determines the angle between the two via an angular transducer (17a, 19a, 117a, b, c, d). In a further embodiment the angle is determined from partially filled spheres (60b, 62b) on which latitude and longitude readings (74b) are marked on and read from. The entire apparatus can be preset from a reference calibration unit (40) to provide reference data for comparison to actual data recorded between two surfaces.
