Abstract

A point of sale system incorporates a cash register (1) and a counterfeit detector (2). The counterfeit detector (2), incorporates a scanner (3) capable of recognising the value denomination of individual banknotes. This information is relayed to the cash register (1) and recorded as part of the transaction. Preferably, the detector uses ultraviolet light and the recognition system a laser.

1 2354624 COMBINED CASH REGISTER AND COUNTERFEIT DETECTOR WITH BANKNOTE
VALUE RECOGNITION SYSTEM This invention relates to a combined cash register and counterfeit detector with a banknote recognition capability.
Counterfeit detectors are commonly used in the retail industry to verify the authenticity of banknotes. These are, however, not connected to the cash register and the amount tendered by the customer is entered manually by the operator. This can lead to customer disputes.
According to the present invention, there is a combined unit comprising a cash register, a counterfeit detector and a scanning device within the detector capable of recognising the denomination of single banknotes. When a note is exposed to the detector, its value is automatically registered as part of the transaction with a permanent record being printed on the sales receipt.
The invention is described below with reference to the diagram which follows and which comprises a cash register (1), a cash counterfeit detector (2) with combined note denomination scanner (3).
Referring to the diagram, (1) represents a computerised cash register, not substantially different from those already available. (2) Represents an ultraviolet light counterfeit detector, not substantially different from those already available but for the inclusion of (3), a laser scanning mechanism programmed to recognise the face value of banknotes. When a note is scanned, its value is relayed to the cash register to form a recorded part of the cash transaction.

Claims (3)

1 A combined cash register and counterfeit banknote detector.
2 A combined cash register and counterfeit detector as claimed in Claim (1) incorporating a banknote value recognition device.
3 A combined cash register and counterfeit detector as claimed in Claim (1) and Claim (2) incorporating a system by which the value of scanned banknotes is transferred to the cash register and recorded as part of the transaction.
