Abstract

If the drain outlet of the condensate trap of a condensing boiler gets blocked, the boiler is prevented from firing. During normal operation of the boiler (not shown), condensate enters a reservoir or trap 1 via inlet 2 and is siphoned out of outlet 3. If the outlet 3 gets blocked, the condensate level rises towards the top of a vent tube 5 thereby creating a positive pressure in a dip tube 4, which is connected to a pressure switch controlling boiler operation. The boiler is switched off or prevented from turning on.

Description

2354313 BOILER SUPERVISION DEVICE This invention relates to a device for
boiler supervision in the case of a blocked drain when applied to a condensing boiler.
High efficiency Condensing Boilers produce a residue liquid known as condensate. It is accepted under certain regulations that the boiler producing the condensate should be prevented from firing in the event of a blocked drain.
According to the present invention the device performs the following function:- The automatic inhibiting of the boiler by operating or preventing the operation of a pressure switch by the introduction of a vent tube of the required height.
The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing, FigI - Condensate enters a Reservoir Figl-1 for the purpose of providing a water seal, or siphon, or bypass, or any, or all three at Figl -2, and leaves at the Outlet Figl-3.
A connection to a boiler pressure switch is made to the Dip Tube Figl-4.
A Vent Tube Figl-5 of a suitable height is incorporated Mi the Reservoir top.
The reservoir is sealed with the exception of the aforementioned places.

Claims (1)

  1. If the condensate is unable to leave the Reservoir Figl - 1, the level will rise towards the top of the Vent Tube Fig 1 -5 so creating a positive pressure in the Dip Tube Figl-4.
The pressure in the Dip Tube Figl-4 will be approximately equal to the height of the column of condensate above the Dip Tubes Figl-4 seal-off point so choice of this height will be determined by the pressure that has to be overcome to inhibit the boiler.
The positive pressure created in the Dip Tube Figl-4 is used to reverse the operation of the boiler pressure switch if it is activated or inhibit its operation if not. This prevents the operation of the boiler in a blocked drain situation.
