Abstract

A process for the production of a fertiliser comprises the steps of treating a leachate biologically and then subjecting same to filtration, the solid fraction being collected for use as a fertiliser.

Description

2353991 A RECYCLING PROCESS The present invention relates to a recycling
process. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for recycling leachate to produce a fertiliser, namely, a substance which when added to soil or water increases its productivity.
Industrial and commercial waste is sometimes disposed of in landfill sites. Whilst a landfill site is operational, incident rainfall may enter the site and consequently, mix with the waste. On doing so, such rainfall is likely to become contaminated to form a leachate.
Leachate is an industrial waste and, in the UK, is subject to control under the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994. In this connection, it is a requirement of a landfill site that the leachate is maintained below a maximum permissible level within the site and as a result thereof, it is necessary to remove the leachate from the landfill site from time to time, At present, the options for leachate, disposal involve extraction and removal of such leachate to another facility for treatment, for example, after extraction such leachate may be taken to a plant sewage works for treatment before being discharged into a river. It will be appreciated by persons in the field that the removal and extraction of leachate from a landfill site is time consuming and moreover, expensive.
According to the present invention there is provided a process for the production of fertiliser comprising the steps of treating a leachate biologically and then subjecting same to filtration, the resulting solids fraction being collected for use as a fertiliser.
It is believed that for the first time the present invention provides a process for the recycling of leachate to produce a fertiliser. In this connection, 2 our research, which has been assessed by the Environment Agency and ADAS Consultants, the latter formerly being part of the Ministry of Agriculture, has established that a fertiliser produced by the process of the present invention had beneficial effects on a sugar beet crop, as same provided an alternative source of sodium and boron and moreover, compared favourably with the application of these nutrients from conventional supplies.
In a preferred embodiment, the leachate, subsequent to biological treatment, is subjected to microfiltration, namely, a pressure driven process involving the separation of a solution into two phases (permeate and concentrate) by the passage of the liquid through a membrane with a solids retention range between 0.8 and 3.0 micrometers.
In a preferred embodiment, the leachate is treated biologically by passing same through a bioreactor that includes a population of microorganisms that use the contaminants in the leachate as a source of food.
One, non-limiting, example of a process in accordance with the present invention will now be described below.
The leachate was removed from the landfill site by the utilisation of conventional pumping apparatus.
Once extracted, the leachate was passed through a bioreactor. The resulting effluent was then passed through microfiltration apparatus to produce two fractions, namely, the filtrate (having a particle size below 0.8microns) and the solids or sludge fraction (having a particle size above 0.8 microns). The filtrate fraction was discharged back to the landfill site in line with the concept of flushing the bioreactor and the solids or sludge fraction was stored for use as a fertiliser.
