Electromagnets. - In elootromagnetic apparatus of the kind described in Specification 172,717*, the two polarized massive U-shaped laminated pole-pieces are fixed upon a non- magnetic frame a carried by a baseplate d and provided with a central vertical nonmagnetic plate i carrying upper and lower bearing-pieces k, k<1>, the upper bearing being readily removable. For adjusting the frame in a vertical plane, the ends e<1>, e<2> of a transverse bar e carried by the frame are engaged respectively with a screw g and spring f mounted on the base-plate. The frame has a plug b fitting a socket c on the base-plate and is prevented from rising therein by a screw h. The armature m is carried by a long spindle n engaging the bearing-pieces k, k<1>, the upper bearing k being removable and the lower one k<1> including a hard steel ball o carried on the plate i. The armature coils y may be carried directly by the frame on opposite sides of the plate i. or they may seat on the lower bearing-pieces and be held in position by the upper bearing-piece, which extends through the plate i and lies partly over each coil. In a modification, Fig. 6, the frame a is provided with extensions a<1> on which is mounted a plate carrying contacts or stops s. The plate r is provided with tubular lugs t, one of which is screw-threaded and engaged by a spindle u which is further screw-threaded with a different pitch for engagement with the bearing v<1>, so that the plate r may be adjusted with respect to the armature m. The plate r is held on to the extensions a<1> by a tension spring x connecting it with the frame a.
