Abstract

An angling pole bung (10), especially but not exclusively for use with an elastic line (16), has mounting means (22), and a winder (14) rotatably mounted on the mounting means (22). The length of an elastic line (16) attached to the winder (14) by use of attachment means (34) can be adjusted by rotating the winder (14) to take up slack or play out more line (16) without the need to detach the winder (14) from the bung (10). The winder (14) is elongate and is therefore constrained from rotating by the walls of a pole into which the bung (10) is inserted, thus preventing the line (16) from becoming undesirably unwound. The bung (10) has a frusto-conical outer surface with a series of grooves (20) running around the surface, so that the bung (10) can be cut to fit a range of poles. Extraction means (26, Fig 6) are provided to allow the bung (10) to be easily extracted from a pole.

Description

2352953 Angling pole bung The present invention relates to an angling pole
bung, especially but not exclusively for use with an elastic 5 line.
Certain types of fishing rod consist of a hollow tubular pole and are used without a reel. The fishing line is attached to an elastic line which passes through the pole and is secured therein by connection to a bung which fits tightly within the inner circumference of the pole. With use, the elastic line becomes stretched and it is necessary to take up the slack. This can be done, for example, by shortening the elastic line and re- attaching it to the hung, or by winding up the excess. Various devices have been proposed which exploit the winding method.
A previously proposed winding device uses a screwthreaded shaft running through the bung, which is screwed up and down to adjust the elastic line. This is disadvantageous in that the elastic line becomes twisted.
An alternative construction is a spool or winder to which the elastic line is fastened and which is removably attached at one end to the bung. The bung and winder are together removed from the pole using a detachable extractor device, and the winder is detached from the bung. The slack elastic is manually wound around the winder, which is then re-attached to the bung whilst keeping the elastic under tension. The whole device is then reinserted into the pole. This process is awkward and is especially difficult to perform with cold or wet hands.
It is an aim of the present invention to address one 5 or more of the aforementioned disadvantages.
Accordingly the present invention is directed to an angling pole bung having mounting means, and a winder, the winder being rotatably mounted on the mounting means.
Thus the length of an elastic line on the winder may be adjusted by simply rotating the winder to take up any slack or to play out more line without the requirement of detaching the winder from the bung.
Advantageously the mounting means comprises a pair of arms between which the winder is mounted.
Preferably the winder is elongate. Then, when the bung is inserted in a pole, the winder is contained and constrained within the tubular wall of the pole so as to inhibit it from rotating, so that the line cannot become unwound. The winder can also be manufactured in various lengths, to have a greater or lesser line capacity whilst still fitting within a pole.
Advantageously the rotation axis of the winder is substantially halfway along the length of the winder.
Preferably the winder is provided with attachment means for attaching an elastic line to it.
Advantageously the attachment means comprises one or more holes in the winder.
In a preferred embodiment the winder is provided with flanges and/or other protrusions to guide, retain and protect an elastic line wound on the winder. The line is thus inhibited from slipping off the winder, and can be protected whilst the length of the line is adjusted.
In a preferred embodiment the angling pole bung has a frusto-conical outer surface. This offers the advantage that the winding device can fit a range of poles of different diameters.
Preferably the angling pole bung is provided with a series of grooves running around its outer surface. This allows the user to easily cut the pole bung to any required is length, and thus remove any excess which protrudes from the end of a pole.
Advantageously the angling pole bung is provided with extraction means. This allows the winding device to be removed easily even if it has been completely inserted within a pole.
Preferably the extraction means comprises a portion having a hole shaped to receive an appropriately-shaped portion of an extractor device.
Advantageosuly the angling pole bung and the winder are made from nylon.
Examples of an angling pole hung made in accordance with the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a side view of such an example; Figure 2 shows a side view of a portion of the example on a larger scale; Figure 3 shows a further side view of the portion shown in Figure 2, in the direction indicated by the arrow III therein; Figure 4 shows a side view of a modified such angling pole bung with its winder removed; Figure 5 shows a further side view of the angling pole bung shown in Figure 4, in the direction of the arrow V therein; is Figure 6 shows an end view of the angling pole bung shown in Figures 4 and 5, in the direction indicated by the arrow VI therein; Figure 7 shows a side view of a winder for the angling pole bung shown in Figures 4 to 6; Figure 8 shows a further side view of the winder shown in Figure 7, in the direction of the arrow VIII therein; Figure 9 shows an end view of the winder shown Figures 7 and 8, in the direction of the arrow IX therein; Figure 10 shows a diagrammatic side view of the angling pole bung of Figure 1 in use with a pole; Figure 11 shows an extractor for use with the angling pole bung shown in Figure 1; and Figure 12 shows an end view of the extractor shown in Figure 11, in the direction indicated by the arrow XII therein, on an enlarged scale.
Figure 1 shows a nylon angling pole bung 10 with a frusto-conical surface 12, the bung 10 having a nylon winder 14. The winder 14 is mounted on the bung 10, as shown in enlarged detail in Figures 2 and 3. An elastic line 16 is wound around the winder 14.
The bung 10 has a hollow frusto-conical body 18 with circumferential grooves 20 cut into its outer surface, in respective planes which are transverse to the axis of the frusto-conical surface 12. The pole bung 10 is further provided with two arms 22, each of which has a mounting hole 23. A further, shaped hole 26 is provided in a surface 24 which extends across the inside of the hollow body 18 (Figure 6).
The winder 14 is elongate and has a narrow elongate central portion 28 with a flange 30 at each side.
Protrusions 32 are provided at each end of the winder 14.
The central portion 28 is formed with two holes 34 spaced apart along its length, on respective opposite sides of its mid-point. Two trunions 36 are provided on the flanges 30 of the winder 14, located centrally of the winder and extending transversely thereof.
The bung 10 and winder 14 are assembled so that the trunions 36 pass through the mounting holes 23 with the winder extending between the arms 22. The winder 14 is thus free to rotate about the axis defined by the trunions 30 within the mounting holes 23. The axis of rotation is therefore perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pole bung 10. This attachment of the winder 14 to the bung 10 is stronger than in previously proposed constructions. 10 The holes 23 are elongate to enable the axis of rotation of the winder 14 to be shifted towards or away from the hung 10, so that the axis for a shorter winder 14 may be located closer to the bung 10, so that even less of it protrudes beyond the arms 22. is Figures 4, 5 and 6 show a modified bung 10, with the winder 14 removed, which has an end 15 which tapers more rapidly than the surface 12. Figures 7, 8 and 9 show the winder 14 of Figures 1, 2 and 3 separate from the bung 10. 20 In use, an elastic line 16 is attached to the winder 14 by tying it through one or both of the holes 34. The winding device is then inserted into the end of a hollow tubular pole 38, as shown in Figure 10. The conical shape of the pole bung 12 allows the winding device 10 to fit tightly within poles of various diameters. The excess part of the pole bung 12 can be readily cut off if desired, the grooves 20 providing cutting lines.
The elastic line 16 is attached at its other end to a fishing line.
After a number of fish have been caught on the fishing line, the elastic line 16 may become stretched so that it is desirable to take up the slack. To do this, the pole bung 10 is withdrawn from the pole 38 using an extractor 42 shown in Figure 11. The extractor 42 has a shaped end piece 44. The extractor 42 is inserted into the hollow body 18 of the pole bung 12 so that the end piece 44 passes through the hole 26. The extractor is then turned through less than 1800 so that the protrusions 46 engage with the surface 24.
The winding device 10 can then be extracted from the pole 1S 38 by pulling the extractor 42.
once the winding device 10 is free from the pole, the elastic line 16 can be wound onto the winder 14 to take up the slack. This is done simply by rotating the winder 14 about the trunions 36 so that the elastic line 16 is drawn onto the winder 14 and around it. The elastic line 16 is guided under the protrusions 32 so that it winds onto the central portion 28. The protrusions 32 help to prevent damage to the elastic line 16 by protecting it from external contact, and the flanges 30 help to prevent the elastic line 16 from slipping off the winder 14.
Once the free part of the elastic line 16 is the desired length, the winding device 10 is inserted back into the pole 38 for resumption of fishing. The winder is prevented from unwinding by its elongate shape, which is too long to allow rotation of the winder when inside the pole.
Numerous variations to the illustrated pole bung may occur to the reader without taking the resulting construction outside the scope of present invention. For example, a smaller circular winder could be used instead of the illustrated elongate winder, providing means are present, such as a ratchet, to ensure that the line is not free to unwind from the winder when in use.
