Abstract
A wall mountable luminaire 11 comprises body 13 for holding lamps (26, figs. 3 and 4) with an aperture 16 for electric cables having a rear face 15 securable to a surface 12 and light transmissive cover 18 with a rim 19 which surrounds body 13 and is secured against surface 12. Cover 18 is preferably smooth and directs impact forces directly to surface 12 rather than indirectly through body 13. Cover 18 is preferably a lens refractor made of polycarbonate and is attached to body 13 by security bolts 22a which engage nuts 22d. Bolts 22a are preferably recessed in cover 18 and closed by transparent plugs 24. Rubber buffers 17c, 22e may be used to aid impact resistance. Rim 19 is preferably provided with seal 19a. Lamps (26) are preferably strip lights, each having a reflector (25). Reflectors (25) can be concave mirrors, cylindrical, adjacent each other (fig. 3) or back-to-back (fig. 4). Luminaire 11 may have a dimmer switch 28.
Description
2352800 LUMINAIRES This invention relates to luminaires, particularly to
luminaires adapted f r surface, e.g. wall mounting. Particularly when intended for external use, such luminaires are sometimes referred to as "bulkbead7' lighting. Particularly, again, for external use, it is desirable that luminaires be robust to withstand accidental or deliberate impact damage, and, of course, sealed to protect the inner workings against the elements.
Conventional bulkhead lighting comprises a body part comprising larnpholder means and having a rear face with aperturing for cable entry and for securing means for securing the body part with its rear face against the mounting surface, and a cover for the lampholder means which is secured with a seal against the body part.
Though made of tough glass, plastic and or metal, conventional bulkhead luminaires are, by their design, prone to accidental or deliberate damage, and this can expose live electrical parts, which can be a personal or a fire hazard.
The present invention provides a luminaire having improved safety features as compared to conventional bulkhead lighting.
The invention comprises a luminaire adapted for surface mounting comprising a body part comprising lampholder means and having a rear face with aperturing for cable entry and for securing means for securing the body part with its rear face against the surface, and a cover having a rear rim, which surrounds the body part and is securable against the surface, and a light-transmissive front face.
The cover may be securable to the surface by fasteners securing it to the body part, and may be securable by fasteners recessed from the front face. Fastener recessing in the front face may be closed by plug means, which may be lighttransmitting.
The cover may comprise lensed refractor means.
The rear face of the cover may be provided with a seal.
The body part may comprise reflector means directing light from lamps in the lampholder means through the cover. The reflector means may comprise concave mirrors. The lampholder means may be arranged for strip lighting, e.g. fluorescent lighting, the concave mirrors then being cylindrical. Two concave mirrors may be situated adjacent, the one against the other, and the lamps so disposed that their beams form a flood, or the concave mirrors may be situated back to back and the lamps so disposed as to cast two separate beams in opposite directions.
The cover may be impact-resistant and may be made, for example, of polycarbonate, possibly with a thickness of 5mm, which will resist shattering by missiles such as bricks and by hammer blows.
The cover may transmit impact forces directly to the mounting surface rather than indirectly through the body part which, with the lamps, reflectors and electronics for driving e.g. fluorescent lamps, will be thereby protected.
The cover may have a smooth profile offering no hanging facility, and in this regard may have, when mounted, no upwardly-directed horizontal part. The cover may meet the mounting surface at an obtuse angle.
Embodiments of luminaires according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is an exploded view of a first embodiment; Figure 2 is a view of the embodiment of Figure 1, mounted; Figure 3 is a cross-section through the reflector arrangement of the embodiment of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a cross-section like Figure 3 of another embodiment.
The drawings illustrate luminaires 11 adapted for mounting on a wall 12 comprising a body part 13 comprising lampholder means 14 and having a rear face 15 with aperturing 16 for cable entry and for securing means 17 for securing the body part 13 with its rear face against the surface of the wall 13, and a cover 18 having a rear rim.19, which surrounds the body part 13 and is securable against the surface of the wall 12, and a light-transmissive front face 2 1.
The securing means 17 comprise screws 17a with washers l7b and rear face rubber buffers 17c, with plugs 17d for holes drilled into the wall 12.
The cover 18 is secured against the wall 12 by fasteners 22 securing it to the body part 13. The fasteners 22 comprise bolts 22a with washers 22b engaging apertured flanges 22c on the cover 18 and nuts 22d with rubber buffers 22e on the back face of the body part 13. The flanges 22c are moulded with the cover 18 in recesses 23 which are, after mounting, closed by plugs 24 shaped to present a surface flush with that of the cover 18. The bolts 22a can be security bolts.
The cover 18 comprises a moulded lensed refractor arrangement - the plugs 24 can be moulded of a light transmitting material.
The rear rim 19 is fitted with a rubber seal 19a, which seals directly to the wall and affords complete protection for the body part 13 and its electrical components, as well as being a buffer against impact loadings on the cover 18. The buffers 17c and 22e cushion the body part 13 against impact loadings on the cover 18, which pass directly to the wall 12 rather than through the body part 13, as is the case in conventional bulkhead fittings.
The body part 13 can be of cast aluminium, for example and comprise reflector means 25 directing light from lamps 26 in the lampholder means 14. Fluorescent strip lamps 26 are illustrated, the body part 13 having a compartment 27 for electronic ballast for the lamps 26, which affords radio shielding therefor. The reflector means 25 are part of the casting but are provided with a specular reflecting surface e.g. by means of a snap-in foil.
As is best seen in Figures 3 and 4, the'reflector means 25 comprise cylindrical concave mirrors. Figure 3 shows two concave mirrors situated adjacent, the one against the other, the lamps 26 being so disposed that their beams form a flood. Figure 4 illustrates back-to-back mirrors giving uplighting and downlighting.
The cover 18 (and the plugs 24) is made of impact-resistant polycarbonate, 5mm thick, and has a smooth profile affording no hanging facility, having, to that end, no upwardly-directed surface when mounted, the cover meeting the surface of the wall 12 at an obtuse angle A, Figure 3. Conventional bulkhead lighting has an exposed body part, the cover attaching to the front of the body part, which then affords a hanging facility to which loads might be attached which break the body part or wrench it from the wall. It is not unknown for suicide cases to hang a noose from a conventional bulkhead light - this cannot be done with the embodiments illustrated, making the luminaires ideal for use in prisons and hospitals, for example.
A switch 28, which could be a dimmer switch, is mounted in a compartment 29 in the body part 13, accessible via a diaphragm 31 in the cover 18.
