Abstract

An animal over-garment comprises a waterproof cover 1 which is adapted to be worn over the animal's back and which can be folded into a neat compact parcel to fit into a pocket 7 adapted to be worn by the animal. The cover is connected to the pocket by a tongue 8 of material, ensuring that they do not become separated. The pocket may be fitted with straps 9 adapted to be secured together around the neck or body of the animal or loops through which a collar, belt or strap worn by the animal is passed before being fastened to the animal. The cover is provided with straps 2,3,4 to secure it in position around the animal's body and chest. The cover and pocket are made from a lightweight breathable, windproof and waterproof material of the type that is commonly used for outer clothing.

Description

2350544 1 DESCRIC15ON AN ANIMAL OVER-Q The present invention relates to an
over-garment for animals. More especially the present invention provides an over-garment for animals which provides protection from rain.
It is known to provide blankets for horses and dogs which are worn over the animals back and held in place by straps which are passed around the animals back and chest. These blankets serve to keep the aninud warm in cold weather and after strenuous exercise. The outer surface of the blanket may be waterproofed to protect from rain.
Whilst these known animal blankets provide effective protection from the extremes of cold and wet, they are not convenient to use. The animal owner must decide whether the weather is likely to require the blanket to be used and make appropriate provision. If the owner decides wrongly, the animal may be encumbered with a blanket which is over warm or may become cold and wet.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an over-garment for animals which provides protection from rain and yet which is lightweight enough to be conveniently stowed away and carried by the animal when not in use.
According to the present invention there is provided an animal over garment which is adapted to be folded into a relatively neat compact parcel and a pocket which is adapted to be worn by the animal, into which pocket the folded overgarment fits.
2 In one embodiment of the present invention the pocket is fitted with straps which are adapted to be secured together around the neck or body of the animal.
In an alternative embodiment of the present invention the pocket is provided with loops through which the animal's collar,'belt or strap is passed before being fastened to the animal. Conveniently, the collar, belt or strap is adjustable.
Preferably, the animal over-garment is connected to the pocket by a tongue of material, thereby ensuring that the two do not become separated from each other.
Preferably, the animal over-garment is comprised of a lightweight, breathable, windproof and water proof material of the type that is commonly used for outer clothing. Conveniently, the pocket is comprised of the same material.
The animal over-garment may be provided with straps to secure it in position around the animal's body and chest.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
is Fig 1 shows an animal over-garment in accordance with the present invention; Fig 2 shows the animal over-garment of Fig 1 after being folded and prior to being stowed away in its pocket; Fig 3 shows the animal over-garment of Fig 1 stowed away in its pocket; Fig 4 shows the animal over-garment of Fig 1 worn by a dog; and, Fig 5 shows the animal over-garment of Fig 1 stowed away in its pocket and worn by a dog.
3 Referring to the accompanying drawings the animal over-garment is comprised of a cover 1 which fits over the animal's back and sides and straps 2, 3 and 4 which pass around the animal's body and chest to secure the cover in place.
In this regard, at least, the cover 1 is much the same as a conventional animal blanket. The cover 1 itself is comprised of a lightweight, breathable, windproof and waterproof material of the type commonly used for outer clothing. This readily lends itself to being folded up into a neat parcel when not in use. To keep the weight of the animal over-garment to the bare um and to ensure that the cover 1 folds up easily the ends of the straps 2 and 3 are provided with velcro strips 5 which attach to velcro strips 6 on the cover 1, and the ends of the straps 4 are provided with velcro, also for the purpose of fastening the two together.
lle cover 1 is connected to the interior of a pocket 7 by a tongue of material 8. The pocket 7 is provided on each side with a strap 9 which can be joined together around the animal's neck to secure the over-garment and can be altered to various sizes 10. The pocket 7 is of a size that readily accommodates the cover 1 when folded up. Furthermore, the pocket 7 is comprised of the same material as the cover 1.
In use the cover 1 is taken out of the pocket 7, unrolled over the back of the animal and then secured in position using the straps 2, 3 and 4. It will be seen that the cover provides effective protection from cold and rain.
After use the straps 2, 3 and 4 are released, the cover 1 is folded up and then stowed away in the pocket 7. As the animal ove r-garment is secured by the straps 4 9 around the animal's neck, it is always readily available for use and being comprised of a lightweight material it does not unnecessarily encumber the animal or inhibit freedom of movement.
The cover is, of course, made in different sizes to suit different sizes of affirnal.
The cover may be provided with integral straps as shown in the drawings or it may be provided with means, such as loops or straps which allow it to be secured to an existing collar, belt or strap worn by the animaL
